Again, a few of one model is slow.

This is seriously getting old.

Sorry Dodger but it is more than a few models. I have two HR20's and they are slow IMO. Are they so bad that I hate them, NO. They are just slower than the Dish 622 and 722.

To me that's a con because you're paying for old technology. I don't watch SD anymore unless I'm forced to....the TV2 option is coaxial SD....unless something has changed since I left Dish.

Not just that but if you want to watch both TV's and still record something you cant. I had a 622 and hated that feature so much that I paid extra to have another receiver in the house.

Every HR20 I have seen, including mine, is not slow at all (some CE's do slow them down). In fact, my HR20 is faster and more reliable than my SD TiVO.

My dad's new HR22 and my grandpa's HR22 are also pretty zippy. The only slow one I have experienced is my dad's old HR21 before it took a dive.

OT: Jag, is that your dog?

The Tivo units were terrible in regards to speed until the later software updates. As I said they HR units are not bad but they are slower than the Dish DVR's.

Yes, that is my baby.

Ok,
I have been with Direc since 1996. I had the Sony( small unit-forgot model number) and Rca units. Direc tivo units ( Philips) to present.

Too me not much has changed. The interface is old-needs a facelift. Worst is the speed. No matter what update the guides have always moved ''painfully'' slowly.

Even after tweeking the guide-Turning something off to make faster?
I do like that the machines can get these updates-Thats cool. Also added features from the download.
I wish that these units had a true skip-not a fast forward skip.
Possible its available on units? Have not seen it though.

I also have been with dish for over 10 years.
510. basic sd dvr. Was great. Lightening fast. First HD dvr recievers that came out were loud and clunky.

However, since the 622 and 722-I feel dish has set a bench mark for set top boxes.

Im am not a shill for dish-Matter of fact, Ive been looking to leave for sometime.
but the hardware is too good. It just makes watching tv that much better.

I have no doubt that the VIPs are faster than any HR. I was mostly addressing the problems people seem to repeat and equate to every model of HR.

I will agree on the current models, but I strongly disagree about the 510 being lightning fast.

We have had or have currently active a 501/508/510 and all three models (have had more than one of each) are sluggish at best, at least the ones we have had were.

I just remember that the 301 and 510s that I have had were much faster than anything i had and have by Direc.

Just my take...

Fair enough. Seems common for us posters to have different experiences with various equipment. lol:)

Well to be honest, The HR 20 is D* best HD DVR and they no longer make them. The HR-21's Slow to respond, HR-22 Slow to respond,
Guess what HR 23 Same thing Slow to respond.
R -15 and 16 is by far the worst receivers ever. R-22 Slightly better then the R16 but still a Far Cry from an HR 20.
So Yes Most HR's are slow, Most R's are slow. Should that stop someone from getting D*, not if they have all the programming and price one could want.
I would much rather have any R-or HR Receiver over any FIOS Box.

no DK, many are slow. just look up any HR models for their reviews and you'll be surpirsed how many have the same complaint. i'm not hating on D* because i love it but lets be honest here.besides if you ever use one of those E* dvrs that will be the day you understand where some of us are coming from. there is no reason or good excuse why we at D* can't have a dvr as responsive as E*'s dvrs are. :)

In my experince I would list the DVRs from best to worst as:

  1. HR20 (OTA tuner and the fastest)
  2. HR22
  3. HR21 (way below the others and very slow. This is the one with the most complaints)

I have not had experience with the HR23, so I have no idea where it would rank

i agree with this ranking ;)

I have an HR20 and it's noticably faster than my HR22. Plus I feel the HR22 has a softer picture than my HR20. I've had them both hooked to the same TV and I can tell a difference. As far as why D*'s boxes are slower than E's I tend to think it's more likely to be hardware than software. Reason being that while the software probably isn't as optimized as it should be, the fact that the same software doesn't perform the same on the various HR boxes make me think that each box has different memory/CPU specs. But in all the boxes probably less processing horsepower than E's boxes.

That said Scott has a couple of different times on this site that he's hearing rumors that the next CE cycle is going to make the boxes significantly faster.

The most recent NR is rumored to fix the speed issues. D* started the roll-out yesterday.

Most of the speed issues are due to the processor.

Just like a computer, if you have a slow processor your computer will run slower more often. Keeping the software efficient, removing crap, and creating a simpler OS will help the computer to an extent. Even a computer with the fastest processor can be slowed down by bloatware, inefficient software, and a poor OS, but it should still be faster than a computer with a slower processor. The fact that there are more speed issues with more units than the VIPs, tells me it is more of a hardware issue trying to be fixed by the software.

And yet the tivo HD which uses essentially the same processor and supporting hardware is a lot faster than my HR20. Thats why I have a hard time blaming the hardware as being insufficient. Of course, throwing $25 at making the hardware a lot faster wouldnt be a bad idea.

My HR20-100 is terribly, terribly slow at times, both of them. Sometimes I hit a button and 3-4 seconds later it responds.

I've noticed if I cut the series links back to about 25 and cut out all of the kids shows that have a thousand episodes a week, it seems to speed up a little bit. So I'm guessing theres a good reason for the 50 series link limit.

I should note that I have three very cute dogs. Maybe theres a correlation between slow HR's and dog cuteness.

My HR20 is a 700 model. So aside from being manufactured by a different company I wonder if there are other differences under the hood. I know that some models that have different sub numbers can be different. For instance the H20-600 has a different OTA tuner chip than the H20-100 model. The 600 has a fifth generation tuner chip versus the 4th generation chip in the 100. Therfore the 600 model is better at receiving OTA channels. Better in fact than any other D* box. But the drawback is that it runs hotter and some people had problems overheating although I never did for the 2 years I had one.
