DirecTV 3D....is it worth it?

Well, I finally bit the bullet and dumped my old 'early adopter' Sony HDTV in favor if a 73" Mitsubishi DLP 3DTV and so far I love it. Now...whether I like to admit it or not, DirecTV is the leader right now in 3DTV entertainment right now with a whopping four channels. The question is...are these channels worth the switch?

As far as my regular HDTV viewing goes, D* not having CookingHD, Hist Int HD, BBCA HD and G4HD is a major downer.

Meanwhile, E* unceremoniously dropping SmithHD, DisneyHD, DisneyXD-HD is also a major bust on them since my kids are not happy.

So...I guess the big question is...given the content on 3net, ESPN3D and the other two channels...is a switch worth it just for that?

Opinions will vary. I have a 3D plasma and rarely watch 3D on it. The loss of brightness kills 3D IMO. I'm one that likes a calibrated picture too.
Most of the 3D channels are looped for the most part.

I upgraded from no commitment in March for 3D, to me it's worth it... I have a 65" mits...

Directv 3D

Actually, there are 5 3D channels: n3D, CINE3D, n3D On Demand, ESPN3D and 3net. I love them all ! I dumped E* in order to get the 3D channels on D*. The programming is very similar, but, of course, I now want more HD and 3D channels.:

I love some of the series they have on 3net & n3D, Bullfighters, the National Parks, and the sports... wish they had more of the Olympics in 3D.

3D programming

The great thing is - I purchased 4 sets of universal 3D glasses from an aftermarket supplier at $40 a pair off eBay (3dtvcorp). They are much smaller and lighter than the OEM Panasonic glasses and are rechargeable via the included USB cable. And, yes, they work perfectly.

I got a 65" plasma a month ago. Have been scooping up 3D blu-rays. The 3D channels on D* look great IMHO.

I haven't upgraded to 3D yet -- my 5 year old 60" Sony LCD is still working great. But when and if I do upgrade, I would definitely want to have the 3D channels on Directv. I'm not convinced that 3D tv isn't a passing fad. I remember when 3D came out in the theatres in the 50's and I thought it as great, but I was just a kid. It never caught on big time then and now it resurfaces some 55-60 years later. People complained that it gave them a headache and that still seems to be a problem, along with a less colorful picture, at least for the TV version of 3D. So I'm kind of waiting to see if it will improve or die out like it did many years ago...

Ah, like when DirecTV just offered us HD Theater, HD Net, and ESPN HD, and HBO/SHO if you paid for them. Big times came when they added ESPN2, TNT, and HDNet Movies. I still found it amazing that all their HD channels fit in the 70-79 range for quite a while, into 2007.

@Jason: I was actually a D* sub during those times as an early adopter. When D* stalemated their offerings in favor of a long term promise and plan, I switched to E* because they had Voom and GalleryHD and fine arts programming (still something desparately lacking now in general).

Well, D* did fulfill there promise. But like I predicted (inspite of the hatefest it inspired) E* would remain right there in the running. And they still surpass D* overall in regular HD channels. Anyway, many of the HD channels I enjoy are not on D*, but there is no denying D* is committed to 3DTV at the moment. I'm just wondering if its worth the switch just for 3D. The repeats put me off thought....not sure.

Get on the Directv homepage and check out the guide, the 3D channels are in the low 100's and you will see the programming available.
It is summer so things are slow, but yesterday Espn3D had Wimbledon on all day which was cool, I've seen Golf also and it looked good also and I'm not a golf or tennis fan.

I watch the 3D stuff on Directv and also have a 3D blu-ray player and have watch a few on there.

3D is a niche product. Its a passing fad, unless; 1) 3D televisions come out that don't require expensive Glasses, 2) There is a way to stop a large percentage of viewers from getting Sick, 3) Improve the viewing angle of the 3D effect.

HDTV was a no brainer, Vastly improved Picture, wider Screen aspect ratio improved the viewing experience. Sorry but 3D doesn't enrich the experience for most viewers it just offers a slight Geek Factor. 3D as an experience from the beginning in the 1950's has always been a novelty. Look at most of the content it is purposely shot to offer that 3 to 10 jump out of your seats moments that really doesn't add anything to the story. If I want to see 3D I'll go outside and throw a frisbee, ball, play Bocce, or any other dozens of outside activities. 3D is highly overrated.
