I am an existing customer. Does directv always have to send an installer to your house when you order (or get a free upgrade) a receiver through them?.. Are there any instances where they will ship it instead?..thanks.

They will occasionally allow a self install by shipping it to you, or you can get one locally, like at Costco or Best Buy. Why don't you want them to do it for you? tap, tap, tap.....

I've had both instances.

Last year I upgraded the rec room box to HD, they insisted on sending a tech out to "install" it.

Sunday, I called for a replacement of my HR21-700 due to hard drive failure and they're shipping it out for self install.

I don't know why the difference.

b/c i have one of those vicious Canadian rottweilers that doesn't like dtv technicians;) ... dtv called me the other day offering a free HD dvr upgrade on my equipment, i had no choice but to turn them down and tell them that I'll call them when I'm interested. I would like to take advantage of the offer, but i want a 'self install'

Hmmm, that's what I thought. Your best choice is to get one yourself, like from Costco.
