Directv Remote & New Sony Stereo Receiver


Okay, I have a silver braided HDMI cable plugged in the Vizio HDMI #1(ARC). That is the ONLY cable coming from the back of the TV. That silver coax goes into the A/V Receiver TV OUT(ARC). I have an HDMI cable coming from the Directv box, going into the SAT/CATV IN.

Sound works fine. No picture.
ON EDIT: When I press INPUT on TV remote, all 3 HDMI settings indicate NO SIGNAL...

OP HERE AGAIN: I was reading the online manual for the Sony Receiver. The online version says that in order to use the ARC function, you must have a high-speed hdmi cable. (I didn't know such a thing existed!). Anyway, I've ordered one - won't be here for several weeks (so much for Amazon Prime). And the printed manual does not mention high speed. Sigh.

 

Don't bother with that ARC nonsense. It never works, and if it does, it will glitch a lot. Just follow Jimbo's optical audio advice. That always works and is fool-proof.

Wait, before giving up on the 1st option ...
Are we sure that she is on the correct input on the TV ?

Never mind ...
I looked again and theres only the 1 output to the TV to be used.

If your getting outside this day and age .... (I do from time to time, till I have to go back to work and go in homes every day)
Call the local Best Buy, tell them you want an Optical Cord to connect to your recvr to TV ... they will get one ready for you and then you call them when you get there and they will come out to your car.

It should be the "TV" input, no? If she is trying to watch the apps, that is. With mine, the TV input brings the audio from OTA, the apps, and anything connected to the TV directly to the receiver. I have tried ARC and it just doesn't work well. And it's never DD 5.1 where it is DD 5.1 when I use the optical.

Yes, mine is the same way ...
I looked again at the recvr and theres only 1 spot to connect going To the TV.


I just looked at my Yamaha recvr and it shows I has 3 outputs to choose from.
 
Wait a minute ....
After looking at your set up and what you said you have connected ....
You SHOULD have a Picture regardless .... on one of those inputs.
Unless, the cable is not seated all the way ..... OR

Your Recvr is NOT Turned ON ....

Make sure the recvr is ON and then check for video, and sound.

This type of set up will require the Recvr to be on whenever you use the TV and want sound out of the recvr.

Well, I'm a step ahead of you...I had ordered one from Amazon several days ago and it arrived today! Now I gotta go back and read what you said to do with it...that'll be tomorrow. I'm down for the night - couch, tv, wine, pup...

Ok, IF you have the cables connected that you mentioned earlier ... if you turn On your recvr, you should get your picture and sound.

NOW.

Here's the setup I have now and it equals SOUND but no picture. The sound is from the channel I have set on the Directv receiver. IF I move the silver HDMI cable over to #2 on the back of the TV, I get picture AND sound, but can't use TV's built-in Netflix/Amazon...I KNOW I'm missing something obvious!



 
Ok, move the HDMI over to #2 like you mentioned and get the Optical cable to hook up and you should be good once thats in place.

When you are trying to watch from the TV, are you switching the input to the TV input on the TV? If not, it will not work regardless if you're trying to use ARC or optical. Just switching the cables isn't switching the input, you have to press input on the remote.

OP HERE: With all the cable switching, I am not sure what I did, but IT WORKS! I moved HDMI cable to #2 on back of television (and it's still plugged into TV OUT on Sony Receiver) and plugged in the optical audio cable! I just tried Netflix and I have sound AND picture! I'll try Amazon later, but I'll bet it works, too!

Now, back to what I call "Isolation Hell"...but it's okay...I don't mind so much!
Me and the pooch are doing A-okay and now it's almost all perfect, thanks to you!

Glad to see the Optical cable solved it for you ....

I too have the Netflix and AP, but never know what to watch.
 
it would also be great if they put seperate HDMI outputs on the minis for dedicated audio since HDMI carries more bandwith than the optical cable

They should put HDMI outputs on TV’s. Run everything to the TV, then HDMI out to the AVR.

Any of the 'optional' parts of the HDMI standard like ARC, CEC etc. will never be dependable or consistent. They don't always get interoperability 100% right for stuff everyone depends on like EDID and HDCP, so there will always be a heavy element of luck getting something like ARC which is used by a couple percent of people working.

Even if you get it working today, a firmware update on either end may break it tomorrow. At least with the features everyone uses if something is broken it will be noticed by many people and (hopefully) quickly addressed. The more 'niche' the HDMI optional feature you depend on, the less likely that is.

Digital audio is just as good as ARC in pretty much every way except hassle, where it is 1000% better than ARC.
