Lightning strike took out my old Onkyo stereo receiver.
Yesterday, I received a new Sony Receiver.
The Directv remote controlled both power on/off AND volume on the Onkyo.

I have:

Vizio Smart TV
HR 24/100 Directv Receiver
RC66RX Directv Remote
Sony 5.2 Stereo Receiver

When I went to set up the remote for the new Sony receiver (the 'automatic' version where I do not know the model of my Sony), I somehow got it to control power on/off, but it will not control Sony receiver volume.

Then I tried the 5-digit Sony code on AV1 and found one that controlled the volume, but the remote switch has to be on AV1.

Does anyone know how I can get the volume to work without having to switch the mode button on the Directv remote? (PLEASE!)

Thanks for any help.

I would Suggest looking at the Sony Receiver -The Model Number should be on the upper right front side.

When you searched --through the menu - It says press the PWR button and it works your good --What I suggest is search again instead of Pwr butto --Press the Vol and see if it changes -- if it does you found the right code.

OP HERE: I originally had the model number and it was not listed. I also did push the VOLUME UP button for every code given...no luck.

The Sony Receiver model number is STR-DH590.

found this via google, make sure you program the tv in first

For the Rc65 its 31758. The volume won't work initially with ANY audio code, reason is the volume won't work at all without a tv code programmed to the tv device. Once done, its volume is in the way, but that can be remedied:

1. av1 or av2
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT, wait for two blinks, release
3. enter 9 9 3
4. press Volume Down

If you want the sony volume in ALL devices do the following instead:

1. av1 or av2
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT, wait for two blinks, release
3. enter 9 9 3
4. press Select

let us know if that works

This process is what I used many years ago to get my RC65 remote to work with my receiver.

I use the RC65 remote (the old one) with my HR44. I despise the peanut remote, too, and with the RC65, it controls my TV and AV receiver just fine. It will even control the apps on the TV like YouTube and Amazon Prime, etc as rare as I use those. The RC65/66 work the same just like the different RC71/73 or whatever (peanut) work the same. I virtually never need any other remote to do anything except the good old white RC65 Directv remote.

I too liked the old white remotes MUCH better than the newer peanut remote ....
I dislike the Peanut remote enough that I went out and bought a Universal Remote MX890.

I Love everything about it, it controls everything I have ... :clapping

Only think I don't like about it, is that I cannot program it myself ...
That said, I have friends at the place that DOES, so if I need something changed or adjusted, its just a case of walking in and they make the adjustment and I'm out.

OP HERE! Enjoying the fruits of YOUR labor in giving me advice. But I AM BACK. New problem! I REALLY could use some simple instructions to hook up 'my stuff'. I have Directv and a Vizio SmartTV with 'built-in' Netflix and Amazon (among others, which I don't use).

My equipment:

Vizio E43-F1 TV (3 HDMI spots, one says ARC)
Directv Receiver HR24
Sony Receiver STR-DH590

Which cable would go where to be able to use the Directv Receiver through the Sony Receiver, AND which cable would go where to be able to use Netflix/Amazon through receiver? It sure has me dumbfounded.

Right now, I have the Directv hooked directly to Sony via HDMI. And Sony to TV via HDMI. Directv works fine. I can't get Netflix/Amazon to work...

Thanks for your help once again! Please speak down to me, in your simplest terms! :)

Connect an HDMI cable from your TVs HDMI Input to the TV Out (white one) on the back of the AVR. Connect another HDMI cable from the HR24s HDMI out to any one of the HDMI Ins on the back of the AVR, it doesn't have to be the SAT/CATV In if you don't want it to be. Tune to the appropriate HDMI input on the TV and select the source on the receiver and you should be all set.

If you have any other HDMI sources like a gaming console or blu ray player, connect them to the A/V Receiver as well.

Leave the TV on the HDMI In and let the A/V Receiver act as an A/V switch to toggle between sources.

The receiver supports Audio Return Channel (ARC), so any audio that comes from the TV or one of the built in apps will be processed by the receiver.

If its only the Netflix and Prime your concerned about (those are on the TV already, right ?
If so, get an Optical cable, plug it in from the back of the TV to the Optical (TV IN) spot on the recvr and you should be good to go.

Since the AVR supports ARC, there is no reason for that, HDMI from the TV to the receiver is all that's needed.
