DirecTV Targets Time Warner Cable/MSG Skirmish (SkyREPORT) 03.14.05

(SkyREPORT) About 2.4 million Time Warner Cable subscribers in the New York area are without coverage of Knicks basketball and Mets baseball due to the program carriage skirmish between the MSO and Cablevision, owner of regional sports networks MSG and Fox Sports New York.

And one satellite TV company is on top of it.

DirecTV plans to launch a print advertising campaign in New York Tuesday highlighting the skirmish between the companies and promote its carriage of the two sports networks. The ads take aim at Time Warner Cable and the fact that the two channels are missing from the cable operator's lineup.

The effort also reminds readers that the Knicks are making a playoff run and the Mets are closing in on Opening Day. The Mets also are playing spring training games. In addition, the ads detail a retail offer in which consumers can get service installed in four rooms for free.

The campaign covers Time Warner service areas in the greater New York area. The Tuesday ad run comes the same day the Knicks play at home, and DirecTV is evaluating whether to continue the advertising when the Knicks return for home games on March 21 and 23.

The months-long program carriage skirmish took a turn last week when the signal for MSG and Fox Sports New York went dark on Time Warner Cable systems. Cablevision said Time Warner Cable shut off delivery of the channels and had rejected an offer to take the dispute into arbitration.
