I'm lazy. I'd like somebody else to calculate the throughput needed to record 16 channels simultaneously to a HDD.

I'm betting it's beyond current technology.

Waith each hard drive costing around $1000 I just can't see it having more than one hard drive. Remember this is DISH where Charlie likes to save every penny he can.

Lots of neat ideas but not sure if the technology is there yet to handle things like this.

To answer Hall, This.... Charlie is cheap for good reasons and we love him for it.

Good point. I wouldn't know the values to start with to do such a calculation so maybe someone else will.

To clarify, I'm not saying it will have (16) tuners, only speculating on how they could have come to that number.

Not only recordind 16 things at a time, but also at the same time serving them (playing back) on up to 4 TV including playback in 4K to the 4K Joeys. That's a LOT of horsepower!

I don't know if that kind of Horsepower exists yet.

Whoops yes one too many zeros in there. :)

Sure you can get a 2 TB hard drive below $100 now, but how many of them can handle 20 simultaneous video streams being written or read from the hard drive at the same time?

What about iVOD or the OTA tuner(s)?
VOD is a mystery - does it really get written to the HD ? Well, some types of them do (they remain in your "Rentals" folder). We'll use that for now...

So, that would be (22) total.

Hell, using this scenario, today's Hopper (with OTA + VOD) has to support....

(4) playback streams (I presume the limit is based on 1-Hopper, 3-Joeys)
(4) PTAT recording streams (Tuner # 1)
(2) satellite tuner recording streams (Tuners # 2 and # 3)
(1) OTA recording stream (OTA tuner)
(1) VOD/On-Demand download stream

(12) total ???

What would having a SuperJoey do to that mix ?

VOD is stored to the hard drive, this way if you watch it again you do not have to download it again.

After a few days (I believe 7 or 14) it is removed from your hard drive.

I think this is a case of Dish calling damn near everything "VOD" (with the 522, they called watching DVR recordings "VOD" too). Some do get put on the hard drive, but aren't some truly only available by streaming ?
