i remember when i was in my teens (early 90s), my friend had a cband satellite, and we could not wait to go over to his house to watch tv. he was one of those cool guys, his father subscribed to all the channels (including porn). it was a joy going over there.

we lived in an area that did not allow satellite. i tired talking my dad into getting a cband that had one of those things that made your dish look like a outdoor umbrella. in the early days, cband had all the channels and was the way to go if you wanted many channels. cable could not compete with the amount of channels cband offered.

then came direct tv. it was still better than cable. picture was better, you still got more channels, more movie channels, channels that where not available to cable.

then came dishnetwork. they brought competion to directv had cool recievers, had more channels than cable, etc.

for years, satellite was the way to go. if you wanted movie channels, channels that cable did not offer (the NICHE channels) you would get satellite.

now a days, to me, cable is the way to go. they usually get the newer channels before satellite, they have better equipment, they have more hdtv.

am i the only one seeing cable becoming the dominant provider again? we will see if the telephone company step up, we don't know. but in my opinion, if you have a good cable company in your area, there is no other choice.

i would love to hear others opionions.

The City near where I live had cable back in the early 60's... I remember My Dad dragging us to town to visit my Uncle who had cable to watch Cassius Clay fight...my Uncle also was the first in our family to have a Color Tv... in 65 I believe... our old B.W. died so we got one in 66... :) Then Sat came along... trust me the worst pq on D* or E* is better than the folks in town with "digital" cable get here....now.

Definitely. We had just regular cable (60 channels) for free because I guess they never disconnected it when we moved in, we moved into that house around 1987, I was about 2 at the time? I don't remember much until 1990 (5 years old then). My grandpa was a rich man and I had no clue about technology, didn't care how it worked I used to think if I took a sledge hammer to my tv I could shake hands with mr rogers. Needless to say good thing only 2 tv's were destroyed in the process before I learned my lesson. Anyways we would go to my grandpas house and I remember he had C-Band satellite, the thing was GIANT but of course he was rich so he always had to have the best. That thing had to be about 15-20 feet wide or so as it was mounted into concrete and had a large motor box. Also had a huge big screen (maybe rptv) that was more than 80", it was just big. Also had a ton of remotes and tons of vcrs, cd players, receivers, never knew what half of it was for.

Anyways I remember going through the tv and I couldn't believe how many channels he had, watching ninja turtles the movie was great and it was so clear on his big tv. I also remember when I changed channels the entire dish would move and I never had a clue how those things worked. But of course as a kid lots of channels were a good thing as I didn't have internet as a kid until about 95 but I did have a computer :) . I begged my dad if we could get what grandpa had (used to think it was called a space satellite). My dad would tell me "are you crazy? Where in the yard do you see we have room to install one?". I don't know if DBS providers were common then. My grandpa also had a farm in Wisconsin had a huge C-Band satellite dish up there too. Also had more bigscreens up there (I seriously still wonder how he afforded all this stuff).

I think it was around 1997-1998 I first saw on TV and saw in walmart and radioshack the small portable satellite dishes. I wanted to get satellite around then but the reason we couldn't was something about a neighborhood code (in our neighborhood the grass had to be certain length, couldn't have patios without neighborhood waiver or something, had to have garage painted certain color in a orderly fashion, I think we had to take down the antenna because it didn't meet the safety requirements regarding wiring not sure). We went to get cable installed again since they finally shut us down but they damaged some tiles pretty bad so my parents complained and we got digital cable free for 6 months, we couldn't afford it but it was weird having a big receiver and all these channels. That was the first time I got the Science channel and it was pretty nice.

As for when I got into DBS. After my dad passed away we moved to Florida and bought a house and we were deciding on services for tv. We had Cox Digital in our old rented house and I didn't like it. I said "lets get directv" my mother didn't want to because they didn't offer locals. She picked DISH and it's alright for us since we don't really watch a lot of sports. I'd have to say I do like Satellite service over cable as I feel the picture (especially HD) is much better.

I don't ever recall Satellite being a public thing or a demanding thing to have back in the day. The only people I remember having it were people with money or those living on a farm. It seemed more like a tv fanatics dream at the time.

For me when I got C-band in the infancy... (my boss had one and talked me into)... everything was in the clear... hand crank and pencil marks for Sat locations and tune in the station and watch a signal strength meter... :) (only ota vhf stations abc, nbc, cbs... kinda ironic as these 3 are the ones identified in the shivera report as my locals )

cable quality will always vary by region. There are some regions where cable offers a better product than cable, and others where satellite still has them beat.

True. I remember our digital Cable in chicago was so much better. Here it was just crap. Maybe it was at the time when we had no money living in the rental house with 20 dollar tv's with built in antennas, don't know. But in our house in Chicago our tv's were average. When we moved we just wanted everything right so we bought all the nice flat screen tv's and the plasma screen along with satellite since I hated the cox cable picture here. So far everything looks better.

I think people think of satellite as more of an alternative to cable more like a cable provider itself than something unique and interesting to have as it was in the 90's. Its become more of a norm.

My general stereotype was expensive but the best picture and lots of channels compared to cable being a low cost wire in house decent ammount of channels and a decent picture. Of course this was a while back, I think the two are equally matched now, the only wars really are pricing nowadays.

i guess the whole reason i brought this up was that when watching the charlie chat, charlie kept saying every channel was a "NICHE" channel. it used to be if you wanted the "NICHE" channel you would have to have satellite. that is not the case anymore as i see that cable usually is beating satellite to the punch.

I compared our cable to Dish recently, cable lost. Now I am sure there are some good Cable out there, Just not here. They offered more HD, by 2, but it was in 720P. In this case, dish beat them.

Sat is the only way to go where I live. I am sandwiched between Portland and Salem, both of which are serviced by CommieCast and our area has Valley Podunk Cable, who just installed high speed internet and never even heard of HD and their rates are outrageous so every other house in the area has a dish.

Satellite is most definitely the way to go here as well unless you do not have a credit card with good credit or dont have the money upfront to pay for a system.

Yeah same company here. Willamette Broadband (Uvision) has taken a beating (deservedly so) from Dish. They don't even bother to advertise in my area anymore. Most of the time part of the channels are out, and even when they're on, overall PQ is sh*t!

Where I use to live, its no wonder why nobody has cable. When satellite first came out, a fair amount of the town had it...now, almost everyone has it. Havent been there in a while, but looking at their cable system, they added a couple channels :)

I kid you not, here is their lineup

2 TNT Turner Network Television
3 CNN Cable New Network
4 WGN
5 TBS
6 NBC (KARE)
7 ABC FAMILY Family Channel
8 ESPN
9 PBS Public Broadcasting Service (KAWE)
10 DISCOVERY Science, Nature Programming
11 FSN Fox Sports Network
12 CBS (KCCW)
13 ABC (WIRT)
14 FOX NET (not an affiliate...the Fox Network...like the cable only WB Network)
15 USA

The only reason I could see getting it is its only 12.00 a month :D

If my cable company had ESPN & FSN with my locals for $12 I'd get that in a heartbeat :)

i kind of new smaller areas was bad, but i had no idea it was that bad. i guess you only get the benefits of a good cable company if you live in a major area.

Satellite is a lot cheaper here than digital (bahaha ya right) cable is. I can get the same thing cable offers for $58 a month for $42 a month from E* or D*. Not to mention ALL my channels are digital on sat., not just the ones above 100 .

Yep, used to spend a fair amount of time in Woodburn. Was a bracket racer at the drag strip in the early to mid 80's and in the mid 90's my son was in a summer basketball league where we had to travel to Woodburn or Marion every Saturday. :)

I live East of Salem, Santiam Canyon area (near Mill City).
