DTV posteda ower fourth-quarter loss, as it took more subscriber market share from rival cable operators.

The top U.S. satellite television operator posted a quarterly loss of $283 million, or 20 cents a share, compared with $310 million, or 22 cents a share in the year earlier period.

It added 444,000 net new subscribers in the quarter.

The fourth-quarter loss includes a pre-tax charge of $217 million for the upcoming sale of Hughes Network Systems, and a charge of $45 million for the shutdown of the company's Mexican operations.

The year-earlier loss included a reorganization expense of $193 million.
