Saw this earlier today. Has inspired me to read the book again before I see the movie. Read the paperback many many years ago. Fresh new copy on my Kindle.
I read the book as teenager and enjoyed it. Many years later the David Lynch movie came out, and I thought he did well for the technology available then. I don't know if any movie can live up to the scope of the novel, but I'll check this one out when I can.
Read the original Frank Herbert trilogy when I was in High School and college. Then, about 20 years later, re-read them again and everything else that was written by his son.
Granted, everything after God Emperor isn't as good as the original 3, but hey, it was Dune and consequently, held my interest.
The original movie (and it's various extended cuts) did well, except for the ending, to live up to Herbert's original, but c'mon, nothing is going to capture that trilogy on the big screen. Sci-fi tried it with a mini-series and while it's a valiant effort, it feels too much like a Broadway production.
I'll watch this new remake, but based on that trailer, my expectations aren't terribly high...

I did the Midnight Show in my bedroom. I intended to watch a couple of minutes to see how they did, and damn if I didn't end up watching the whole movie!

Almost sold out, the same for showings on Sunday. It wasn't in 3D so can't comment on that.

I tried to watch it, twice. Never could get into it. It was visually well done, but thats about all I can say personally that I found appealing about it.

I finished it, but really did not like it and I am a geek ( still read comics at age 54 ), never read the book and I actually think the first movie is more watchable because it is so bad you cannot look away, this one is just blah.
The best part about the movie was Jason Momoa as Duncan, when his character died ( I know he died in the book) the movie lost whatever energy it had.
Also, we watched it outside on the 175" screen with the projector to make it more like a event, didn't help.
I'll start by saying, I've never read the book, never watched the other movies or the miniseries. I watched this and it looked very good. The effects were great. That said, I think that this is a perfect example of a story that needs to be told in a series on the small screen as opposed to in a multipart movie. The world seems very interesting but there was so much left unexplained. I don't really understand who the different parties are or what drives them. The break point for the "end" was terrible. Nothing really resolved and they could have just as easily stopped it 50 different places and it would have felt just as awkward. The fact that they didn't film part 2 concurrently is a huge mistake and means we are at least 2 years from the next release. There shouldn't be more than 1 year between releases to keep people interested.
lakebum431, I was thinking the same thing. AppleTV+ could have made "Dune" as a multi-season series and gotten into the history of why there are Mentats and not computers, for example. I think it would have made a better choice than "Foundation", personally.
That being said, a lot was left out of the current movie. As cheesy as it was, the first "Dune" movie did do a better job of filling in the backstories.

Exactly. Or HBO could have done it. That said, I read last night that there is a spinoff in the works on the Bene Gesserit. Could be good.
