dvd recorder vcr combo hook up help

I just got directv installed this week i got a hd reciever in the bedroom
I also have a dvd recorder I am trying to hook up to the hd directv box
I got an hdmi cable input on my dvd recorder
The question I have is can I hook up my directv hd box to the dvd recorder using the hdmi cable on the dvd recoder or do I have to hook it up using the inputs cords like red white cords?

I got it hooked up using the red white input cords but in order for me to watch dvd or record on dvd recorder I have to put in on an input channel on my tv instead of the hdmi channel I know I am making sense lol please be gentle to new guys lol

That HDMI connection is an output to the TV, not an input. Use the s-video/composite connections to record.
