DVR Fees - Will they continue forever?

Misstating things is just the wrong way to look at it.

You can get a DVR, cheaply and simply.

Say you have 2 TVs, if you want to save some money, get 2 211k's.

No DVR fee at all, other than a one time HD enabling fee.

Then $7/month (I think) for the 2nd one.

There - Done!! 2 DVRS, no DVR fee at all!!

I just looked up the 211k at the DishStore, and it doesn't mention that these are DVRs. Am I missing something?

Technically they aren't, but by adding an external Hd and paying a one time enabling fee, they become one. If one tuner is enough, it is an excellent option to consider for a bedroom or some such.

interesting. Thanks. I guess I've really been out of the loop lately. I don't seem to be as gung-ho on the satellite bandwagon as I've been in the past. I used to be up on all of this stuff. Gettin' old, I guess.

You are correct. The 721, 501 and 508 were grandfathered and did not have DVR fees. Even further back, Dish did not charge DVR fees, and bragged about it. Times change. No sense in getting emotional about it. And no sense in blindly sticking it out without reviewing your options.

I have a PURCHASED 922 and a 722. Because I have these two receivers, I pay (like everyone) $27 a month for the privilege of using them.

I'm not sure why the DVR fee jumps to $10 when you add a ViP922, but it seems to.

As for getting a break because you purchased the DVRs outright, that hasn't been the case with DISH Network nor DIRECTV for some time. Both charge the same monthly hardware fees whether owned or leased.

Because it's supposedly their flagship, top of the line product. More bells and whistles. Never mind some of the older bells and whistles don't quite work any more. I really is a "because we can" fee. Sigh.

From what I read here, it seems less and less likely I will ever want a ViP922.

These prices do not include promotions, upfront costs, nor additional programming, and HD is assumed to be paid (not the free for life with either company). With just about every setup, Dish is slightly better in price than Direct. Even though DVR fees and additional receiver/DVR fees are higher than Direct, total price is still less with Dish in most cases.

Thanks for the hard work here DK. I'm surprised at the numbers. I thought anything beyond 2-3 TVs was going to be Direct all the way.

DuoDVR reciever or not though, $17 is outrageous, which is on top of the $10 DVR fee (for the 922). I only have two boxes, the 922 and a 722k, so I shouldn't complain too much but if you add it up I'm still paying $13.50 per receiver and I think that is too high.
But I'm not going to continually bitch about it either. I'm overall happy with Dish. The ViPs are great boxes. I'm sure I'd be just as happy with Direct and the 24 series though.

All very true. I wasn't saying that Direct was cheaper or anything, just that I think the receiver fees are too high. Like I said, I'm not going to continually bitch about it and I'm happy with Dish, and my 922 has been very stable, great receiver, so I'm grateful for that too (knock on wood).

Actually DIRECTV is giving HD for life to new subs. So you have to lower the price $10 on DIRECTV, so DIRECTV actually is ahead (lower price) in both cases.

Thanks for the reality check. The bottom line is that DISH/SATS is no longer the "best" deal for their "best" customers. The feejacking (taken from the SatelliteGuys.US dictionary) has gotten out-of-control.
