EchoStar To Buy Mexican Satellite Operator Satmex - Quick Facts







(RTTNews) - EchoStar Satellite Services, L.L.C., a subsidiary of EchoStar Corp. (SATS: News ), and Satelites Mexicanos, S.A. de C.V. or Satmex on Friday announced an agreement whereby EchoStar will acquire an ownership interest in Satmex, Mexico's leading satellite operator.

MVS Comunicaciones, EchoStar's partner in the fast growing Mexican direct-to-home TV service Dish Mexico, will also participate in the ownership of Satmex through a joint venture with EchoStar. Together, EchoStar and MVS Comunicaciones will buy all of the outstanding stock of Satmex.

Satmex will be bought for about $267 million in cash, plus up to $107 million in cash on Satmex's balance sheet at closing, resulting in total cash of up to $374 million available for distribution to Satmex's stakeholders.

The deal is expected to close early in the third quarter of 2010

That's right. It was just that SatMex felt Echostar's first attempt was at too low a price. So, yes, Echostar is offering a bit more money this time (SatMex can't be choosy at this bankrupt point, no other serious offers) and SatMex is saying, "YES!"

TiVo would love to be bought by Dish or Echostar, but TiVo wants a huge price. It's always the price the "seller" wants from the buyer in such "mergers" or corporate purchases. IMHO, Charlie would have gladly bought TiVo after the trial and years following, but TiVo wants too much money for Charlie's blood. So, the lawyers got more money. Ergan has settled similar patent disputes in the past, so if the price is right, he will buy or settle, for good terms.

Satmex was the worst mistake of Mexican Goverment, so it is the New Space Agency, they don understand Mexico is a 3rd World Country and Satellites are beyond their reach.

I'm glad Echostar will buy this crap company and i hope this move gives Latin America better Satellite communications.

It is going be interesting how much more content they will provide in Dish Mexico and seems like the competition is going to be interesting between Dish and Sky/Directv. Thank god that Satmex has finally been sold to somebody...

Are you calling the 13th largest economy a 3rd world country? wow i thought that would apply to countries like Angola or Haiti. As a matter of fact, i thought that term is a bit antiquated... i thought the terms underdeveloped, emerging market, and developed were now being used. oh well so much for education... but i do agree with one thing... the mexican government does suck and progress should be made in the area of private business.
