Just a quick question, when you have a external hard drive will it work on a friends or relatives Dish DVR receiver? Also, what happens if you would need to replace your current DVR with another one, can you still use the external hard drive on the new DVR receiver? Or does the external hard drive need formatted to the new receiver?

The hard drive that you purchase and hook into your receiver can be used with any receiver on your account that is compatible with it (612,622,722). If you try and hook it up to a friend's Dish network receiver it will simply display that it sees a hard drive that needs to be formatted before it can be used. It will not allow the transfer or viewing of the content of the hard drive on a receiver that is not on your account. If you have to replace the receiver you'll simply hook up the hard drive to the replacement and continue as usual.

nsafreak has the correct response. Your EHD will only work on receivers that are on your account, and in the same EHD family. If you try to connect to a friend's receiver, the EHD will ask to be formatted before it will work on their receiver.
