external harddrive question

i am having directv installed today. i have a bunch of movies on an external hard drive from dishnetwork.

does anyone know if they will work with my directv reciever, when instaled?

No, they will not, also be aware that Directv uses eSATA drives that take the place of the internal when on...

No, it will not work.
When you plug in the ehd to the D* recvr it will reformat the hard drive and set it up for the |* recvr and you will lose your movies in the process.

Do I understand you in that if I plug in the external drive, IT will be used for recording rather than the internal drive?

I have been using the external drive to store movies that I can watch much later. I use the internal drive for short term recordings that I delete when done.

Yes, it will take the place of the internal and unlike dish you cannot "Hot Switch" the drive, you must power the receiver down to connect the external.
