Does anyone know good way to turn off this @#(*&$^% "improvement?

Have you tried these to see if they setup the URL Bar the way you want?

about:config

1. For setting the URL bar to auto suggest according to only what you type. In “about:config” (type it in your address bar without the quotes for those that don’t know) look for:

browser.urlbar.matchOnlyTyped

…and change the value to “True” then restart the browser.

2. For turning the auto suggest off completely, in “about:config” look for:

browser.urlbar.maxRichResults

…and change the value to “0?. Now you’ll have a regular old address bar without an auto suggest feature.

Thanks. I want it to stop the annoying behavior altogether and your last suggestion will help.

Geronimo:

With the final rel v3.0 this 'about:config' method worked for me to achieve your stated goal; WITHOUT any needed additional plug-in etc.

does this revert the "awesome bar" back to the way it was in firefox 2.0?

hmm...when i start typing bat, the first page that I go to with the title being Bat opens, but not the first website url that starts wtih bat :\

Double check the about:config edit and then restart your session. You can also turn off your browser's URL memory feature; which enables it to remember anything you entered previously in the URL bar.

I found another way to setup the "URL Awesombar" feature in Firefox 3.

1. Reset the above instructions back to default.

2. If you do not want bookmarks to appear in the drop down list then you can put this code in userChrome.css.

#PopupAutoCompleteRichResult richlistitem[type="bookmark"] {display: none}
