Except that most viewing occurs on those stations. If satellite couldn't carry the major networks, most people wouldn't find them competitive with local cable.

11 PM PT -- SEATTLE SHUT-OFF????

4 - KOMO -- General Manager has been on saying that DISHs contract ends tonight at 11PM and that the signal will be shut-off without a resolution.

Not sure if it's just KOMO (ABC) or if other stations are effected.

Looks like all the little media groups mrebroadcast contracts are up with DIsh and they arre trying to run up the cost to Dish. Dish has already forced one group to get real after shutting their stations off for a few days.

Just hang in there, they will be back on soon. Call your local station and their advertisers and tell them you don't agree with demanding more than the standard market rate everyone else is paying.

I suspect D* will be taking a harder line with locals in the future, too. Certainly recent announcements from them indicate an increased awareness of, and attention to, the bottom line.

Satcos and cablecos have some leverage here. If the local station is dropped, their audience size decreases, and then their ad revenues.
 
You're right, that really is over the top.

I must add, I think people are watching traditional NETWORK shows, and very little of what the actual "local" stations produce. Local news is of interest, but that's where local stations seem to be cutting the most. Local weather is maybe covered better by weather.com and others.

OTA is under threat, and may fade away. ABC, NBC, and CBS can survive by directly marketing to satcos and cablecos. Can't today, but things change.
 
Not enough

Unless Fisher starts pulling most of it's station off E* then it will be just a waiting game. Thing is they are bitching about not getting paid: last I knew you either go for must carry or get paid not both. I think they are testing the waters to see if they can get away with it and then push for it on all stations they have. don't think E* will budge for a while. It's gonna be reruns until at least Feb.

Maybe the reason why more stations have not tried anything is due to the fact that Dish Network does not let it happen to begin with. Local stations feel that they should get paid the same as national cable stations. From what I hear, network stations are losing ground on ratings.

That's a pretty blind statement to just assume that Young caved into Dish. None of us know what the outcome of that was, just as we don't know what the sticking points are with Fisher Communications. We all know Dish wants retrans for no money and the TV Groups aren't having any of it.

It's simply business. Unfortunately in the last three instances Dish subs are affected. This also happened recently with cable. Oddly, I haven't heard anything like this happening with DirecTv in a long time. I suspect that will change in the very near future.
 
I believe that the biggest reason that local stations are important is that you can only get network programming through them. That's because that's the law. I believe that's because local TV advertising can make or break congressional campaigns, and possibly presidential campaigns--this gives the NAB lots of power in Congress. One of the arguments that gets made is that local stations support local news and emergency communication. This is somewhat true.
