I am new to the Fortec Star sat dish.

Can we get local channels from where we live and from other cities, states with this dish? So far, I know you get a bunch of free to air available international stations (ie: Middle East and South Asian). What about locals???

Generally speaking: no.
No reason your local stations would even be on FTA satellite.

DishNetwork and DirecTV may have them on their satellite systems, but you would not have access to those.

As Anole said, you cannot usually find locals on FTA. There are a couple of exceptions, such as the Virgin Islands networks on C-Band (need at least a 6 foot dish), and a couple others here and there. Usually, those are up there for cable companies to use. Sometimes, local TV stations go up on satellite when there's an emergency situation and they need to get their signal distributed in an unconventional way. That happened after Hurricane Katrina in the case of a handful of New Orleans locals. They later disappeared from satellite when their towers were fixed.

another exception?

I have so much local OTA PBS here, I never look on FTA, but...
There are several state-wide PBS systems which may have some regional content.
I know Orange County (California) PBS has a subchannel here OTA, but that's not on satellite.
