I just hooked up my new Fortec Star (Dynamic) receiver and have a problem with the S-Video signal.

I had a Coolst 5K connected to my A/V system using this S-Video cable and the video was in color. However, when I connected the Fortec Star, the video through the S-Video cable was B&W.

I inspected the connector pins, all were OK. I tried reseating the cable and wiggling it around slightly and didn't see any indication that the color video was going to pop in.

I reconnected the Coolsat and the video was normal, then back to the Fortec and still B&W.

Is there a setting in the Fortec that I need to set for the S-Video signal output to operate appropriately? I just received the Fortec and this is the first time connecting it. All the menu displays are present, I was able to scan channels on 97W and I have audio. I have not tried the Component or Composite Video phono cable outputs yet (I would need to get behind the A/V center and run these cables).

I don't have the new Dynamic but I do have the old Merc II and they are identical from what I hear. So, to change that, hit menu button on the remote. (I hope they are similar) and go to the second menu option, "System set-up". Then the second one down, "TV Setup" and then "Video Output". I have selection for S-Video and YPbPr. Choose S-Video and you should be good to go. When I have the wrong one selected it is also B&W. Hope this works. If your menus are different, you will have to wait for someone with a Dynamic.

Vanalex,

Thank you very much!

I must have been skimming the manual too fast and missed it. I have a terrible cold and had to change my shift hours at work to graveyard shift on top of that. I am having a difficult time concentrating and my eyes burn like fire! Hard to read too much at one time.

I tried to read the manual more slowly and I did find those instructions listed on page 16 and they are identical to your Merc II.

I am a little surprised that they would design it this way. My Coolsat 5000 doesn't have such an option. Both video sources are always fully functional. I wonder what their reason was to set it up like this. I don't know what the purpose or advantage would be. Maybe to conserve more power (what little would be used) by not having both circuits activated at the same time?

Thanks Dan,

Gordy

Gordy,

If you have component connection on your TV, then use the component outputs on the Dynamic. Much sharper picture. Otherwise, S-Video will be better than RCA video or RF video.

Sadoun,

I used to have all my video sources set up with the component video connections. But, I got tired of messing with all the wires (I do like the video quality better, though). I just opted to use the S-Video cables out of shear convenience (less bulky) and my A/V HTS served the connections better.

I am hoping that future generations of FTA satellite TV moves towards the HDMI cables. Then you can even eliminate the audio RCA cables as well.

It really cuts down on the birds nest in the back of the entertainment center!

P.S. A Note on HDMI cables. A $6 three meter HDMI cable is every bit as good as a $32, $67 or $175 three meter HDMI cable. There is no difference at all.
