FOX Tries to Out FOX DISH's Hopper

Oh wow, they will let you look backstage whooooo, I cant contain my excitement and not skip the commercial, says no one ever lol

Unless the advertisers get a price cut for having their commercial on half of a screen, no one would pay full price for half a screen, plus the show on the other half.

Well from what I have recorded... 2/18 Tuesday - no auto hop. 2/19 Wednesday - auto hop. 2/20 Thursday - no auto hop...

I give FOX credit on this. The execution is poor in this case IMHO, but the idea is 100% correct. Instead of fighting technology, find a way to work with it. Maybe next time they can come up with something people want to see during the commercial, or some other technique. The Music industry not only found a way to work with the digital technology, they conquered it. Who is going to bother stealing or copying other's music when you can get it for something over a $1 per song, less per album? And they dropped the ridiculous tries at preventing copying your owned music, in fact encourage it and make it easy to do.

So while a poor first attempt, making the programming itself more compelling and then finding a more interesting way to make people not want to skip is going down the right path. Unfortunately it does not mean they will stop fighting it.

Cameras roll backstage for what is normally a commercial break. One of the contestants has a few flakes of dandruff on his collar, producer or whomever tosses him a bottle of head and shoulders.:D Heck the contestants could wear shirts, hats, etc, pimping a product, while they are performing.

Before long they will start showing the commercials on a split screen during the program while they are singing. Or better yet the contestants will sing the commercial songs while they show the commercial on the split screen at the same time. "Plop, plop, fizz, fizz, oh what a relief it is !!"

That might not be a bad idea so it is a win win for Dish and the prime time providers. Get the law suit over and then install Autohop on all channels. What do you think?

My daughter watches American Idol and the problem FOX didn't factor in is how the Hopper operates with Autohop. Unless my daughter knew about the backstage stuff, when she starts the recording and it asks "do you want to Autohop?", she chooses "Yes".

I don't think this is a big deal, unless of course they start doing things like revealing who's eliminated/staying during one of these commercial breaks, instead of during the show itself....

In the 50s the commercials were part of the show with the actors fully participating in the commercial itself. Product placement was a regular part of most sitcoms and shows back then. Meaning you couldn't really get up and leave the room because they would sneak a 30 second to 60 second commercial in the dialogue of the show itself. Something I've noticed lately was during Being Human on Syfy, they will use the outside set of the house where the characters live at. Then the commercial characters will also be werewolves and or vampires and the commercial looks and sounds like it is part of the show . H-50 does a commercial where they play up the Chevy Camero in Hawaii and talk about how the shows characters ride in a Chevy Camero etc. The hopper doesn't even skip this commercial and it happens every week the show plays.

I remember commercials in the 50s. Sometimes I like commercials, you can learn about new shows, new products, etc. I could live with side by side and just skip forward when needed like I do now when racing programs do side by side. Na, never mind, give me Autohop. I must be losing my mind. LOL

Why no OTA when there is a signal loss?
