According to Wikipedia, "Galaxy 25 has a projected life of 12 years, is scheduled to be replaced in the third quarter of 2008 by Galaxy 19" Apparently Galaxy 19 is going to have a stronger signal. "The clients for Galaxy 19 are expected to include the current clients for Galaxy 25. Expanded services include higher-powered C-band and Ku-band transponders as well as new, high-power Ka-band service."

Will this replacement be seamless? That is, are we likely to lose the channels for some time while one satellite is replacing the other?

yes its seamless. They usually do the upgrade (satellite swap) early in the morning.

If they do it during the day, the downtime is very minimal if at all. Usually we know when a new satellite is in place (especially if the signal is better)

now you might wonder why we're going from G25 to G19 ;)
The satellite known as IA5 and before that Telstar 5 when Galaxy bought the fleet, they just made those sats "Galaxy 2X" to confuse us :D
