During motorcycle season, I pump my own gas (lawfully), but "mini-serve" is the order of the day for "cage" drivers at metropolitan gas stations.

I have a hard time imagining that insuring the general public against setting themselves and the station on fire doesn't cost as much as attendants.

I paid $3.339 at Costco for premium yesterday. Since I was driving the cage, I didn't have to get out of my seat. Oregon's gas tax is 36.77 cents/gallon

California's state gas tax is second only to Pennsylvania at 55.22 cents/gallon. That doesn't cover the grade differential.

The cheap Arco station in San Mateo is $3.639 today for regular. The stations on El Camino Real are well over $4. Most of the stations in The City (San Francisco) are under $4.
