Thanks to some of the information that I received within this forum I was able to get what I think is a very good deal on the HR20 and just wanted to share how I got it done.

Ive been with DirecTV for about 4 years and just a normal 'A' list subscriber - a bill of roughly $80 per month. Recently I have been having problems with my H20-600 resetting itself all the time and a few calls to tech support left me with no options other than leasing a new H20 for $49 + shipping. I read here that many people were able to get a free upgrade so I thought this would be a great oppertunity to try and get that as well.

What I did was send DirecTV an e-mail letting them know the problems I was having and asked when my contract was going to be expired. Didn't threaten to leave, just asked the question. I received a response saying that someone would call me to talk about the issue. I spoke with the CSR this morning and basically she wasn't any help and couldn't understand my issues. She told me it would be about $65 to cancel which was about the only useful information she provided me. I tried to explain to her that I could go to Comcast and get a free HD-DVR plus a lot of savings on phone and internet and it would only cost me that $65 to buy out my contract with DirecTV. She didn't understand the math so I said thank you for the time and I would talk things over with my wife as to what we wanted to do.

This afternoon I then wrote a response back to the email I received and explained the math. Wrote out how I could get a HD-DVR for free and save a bunch elsewhere too buy just buying out the contract (used this term instead of 'cancel' - sounds better :)). I told them that I really didn't want to switch because I was excited about the future HD plans DirecTV has, but an initial savings of over $200 (the cost of an HD-DVR and shipping from DirecTV) and substantial monthly savings made it really difficult to stay. Especially with a newborn in the home, an savings is good to me.

So, this afternoon I get a call from another DirecTV representative saying that they really wanted to keep my business and this is what they offered me:

1. HD-DVR for free - did have to pay for shipping though
2. HD Service free for 12 months
3. $10 programming credit for 12 months

So for a payment of $21 and change I got a new HD-DVR and $20 off my monthly bill for a year. Of course this required a new commitment, but I am OK with that. I think the key was being very cordial and explaining my situation to them. I never 'threatened' leaving or even asked them for anything for free - just showed them the differences and they came to me with the deal :)

Just wanted to share that yes it is possible to get a 'free' upgrade to the HD-DVR as long as you aren't aggressive and you have good reasoning as to why you should be able to get it for free. Think this was a good deal? :)

Wow! I've been thinknig of trying to get the free HD-DVR upgrade myself. I have been with D* for nearly 5 years now and I am an "A-List" customer. I'll see how it goes... Anyone have a good phone number to contact D* retention or a service specialist with little or no wait? The old retention number now requires a pin # :(

I called retention about 3 months ago and this is what I got.

1. HD Package free for 6 months
2. $200 instant credit (in place of new hardware)
3. NFL Sunday Ticket SuperFan for $49
4. $10 credit for 12 months

So always worth giving them a call.

I just had the same problem with my H20-600. It would reset about 5-6 times a day, more often when watching HD channels.

I went through the technical assistance process and reset my receiver to the defaults. They said 9 times out of 10 that works, but it froze and reset again an hour later.

So, I called back to have it replaced and they told me I would have to pay $20 for shipping and sign up for another 2-year commitment for a replacement. I asked how much it would be to buy out my contract (around $87) and said I would discuss with my wife our options.

I then wrote an email explaining that my local cable company is offering a free HD-DVR, etc. like original post.

They callled me back and offered me a free HD-DVR with free shipping. I didn't get the $10 month credit or free HD service fee, but good offer none the less.

One thing though, they didn't mention anything about having to sign another 2-year commitment. Do they have to get my authorization for that or does the new order automatically apply that to my account?

yep, except if they were replacing defective equipment that is leased, i don't personally think they should hit you with another 2-year contract. i might raise a stink about that!
