H3 EHD lists upcoming airings instead of recordings on EHD and often won't recognize EHD is connected after reboot

This started a couple months ago. I have 2 H3s on one network, both with 2 EHD identical 3 TB seperately powered so all recordings are accessible by all 4k & J4s (8 of them).

On one H3 (not the main one that controls the MOCA network), after it reboots, it doesn't recognize it has two EHDs plugged into it. Rebooting the EHD by their power source doesn't fix it. Resetting the network doesn't. Software h3 reset doesn't fix it. Rebooting MOCA h3 doesn't fix it but so far, after 3+ cold boots (unplug pwr to H3 with unrecognized EHDs), it finally it figures out they are plugged into it. BUT.... Then when you open a program it only partially shows series and episodes, but instead of showing recordings, it only shows upcoming airings. HELP!!!!

Ok, after a several hours, apparently it re-indexed the EHD files and they now show without further intervention. But, why does the H3 fail to recognize the EHDs are connected after several reboots?

Have you tried to put the EHD from the H3 with problem on the H3 that works to see if the results are the same? And of course assuming you don't have the problem when swapped, does the EHD from the H3 without the problem have problems on the H3 with the problem?

No, I haven't done that, and next time I'll try that, but I have swapped the connections to the offending H3 and reconnected them individually over the last several failures to connect as well as the physical drives in each of the drive enclosures. Both have individually reconnected in their same or different enclosure individually without the other connecting, then swapping the connection or the enclosure the H3 reconnects to the one on the H3 port that had connected to the other and the other still goes unseen. Plus, the likelihood of 2 drives and/or enclosures both simultaneously failing at the same time seemed like pretty remote probability, especially since swapping them when only one connects shows the other works fine and the H3 is what isn't recognizing something on that port. But I'll give it a try. Bet ya $100 that the other H3 drives won't connect when the offending H3 decides to ignore EHDs and bet the drives it didn't recognize work fine in the other H3. But if that doesn't occur, it would definitely is the last isolation step to execute. Based on other behavior though, I'm still doubtful that would be the cause with both drives.

Ok, after today's auto H3 reboot, the EHDs failed to connect again. Moved them to the other H3, they connected right away. Moved the EHDs from other H3 to the problem one, and they also failed to connect. Moved them all back their original positions and the H3 that works with EHDs reconnected them and the H3 that is being flakey, still didn't reconnect the original EHDs.

Three cold boots later, they still didn't reconnect. Ran a system test, MOCA and HD were OK, system had error, and Internet was still testing so I couldn't see or send what the system error was, I walked a way for a few moments and when I came back it was rebooting itself. The EHDs were connected at that point without having any issues with the EHDs recordings. Don't know if the system check fixed it, or if it was just the 4th reboot. Any other ideas for why this H3 fails to reconnect EHDs after most reboots?

That would pinpoint it to the H3 that is the problem. Are both H3's on the same software version now and before? Did the system check actually do the full EHD test like the one below?

They are both currently listed at V. H711 bootstrap V 1117 but the dates (are those install dates or V dates?) Are 9/5/2026 on naughty H3 and 8/15/2026 on nice one.
The current version is H713 but many people had been having issues with versions H711, H712, H713 which includes Remote issues - both the original DISH branded remotes and also when they use third party remotes that uses IR. There is also the support for the OTA single tuner dongle that stopped working, I forgot if that problem started with H710 or was it H711.

I seem to have the same issue, I have 3 2.5" EHD's on a powered USB hub and in the last nightly reboot, it is seeing 0 EHD's as hitting DVR is not showing any of the EHD's. I had seen between 1-2 EHD's in H713 but all 3 with H712.

What I noticed and this is not just in H713 but even many years ago is that after the Hopper 3 whether standalone or with the Hopper Plus when it boots, don't hit the DVR button until after all the EHD's has been detected or else it will not show EHD's aka Other Devices when DVR is hit later as it seems the DVR Recordings screen cannot be displayed until after all the EHD's had been detected. Otherwise, it will only display up to the number of EHD's that had been detected in Other Devices before DVR is pressed. Not sure if that problem is specific to my Hopper 3 which I have had since February 2016 or are others seeing the same issue or not.

One can tell when the EHD's are detected as the light(s) on all EHD's will blink rapidly until that EHD is detected successfully or not by the Hopper 3 and then the blinking will stop for that EHD and on the screen will be an announcement of "External Device x" where x is 1-3.

What I noticed is that in the detection phase is that it will called each EHD as a number between 1-3. If it ever shows as 4 with External Device 4 when there are only 3 EHD's physically connected, the one with the 4 will not show up as a EHD. Unplugging and plugging in will not fix it as it requires unplugging and wait until the Hopper 3 boots up completely before plugging them in.

I did reboot using the Reset Hopper in the menu and Other Devices shows 2 devices which consists of the Hopper 3 Internal HD and EHD 1. EHD 2 and EHD 3 is missing.

Using the Red Button Reset, Other Devices would show 3 with Hopper 3 Internal HD, EHD 2 and EHD 3. EHD 1 is missing.

So one needs to find EHD 1 which can be done by selecting the EHD's being EHD 2 and EHD 3 in this case and whichever one is selected will have the light going from solid to breathing as soon as you select it and if not, then it requires playing back any content. So in my case, once I found the 2 that has the breathing LED, I unplugged the 3rd one and it would say Device disconnected except it will be named as "." instead of the EHD # and then plugged it back in and this time it detects as EHD 1 and Other Devices in the DVR Menu will now show 4 with the Hopper 3 Internal HD, EHD 1, EHD 2 and EHD 3.

If the above detects as EHD 4, then it can be fixed with a menu Reboot, Reset button. If that still does not fix it. The EHD with the issue needs to be disconnected before the reboot process and only plugged back in after the EHD detection phase.

For the External Hard Drive 4 detected message, Google Search AI probably explains it better but for 1. The Total USB Clear & Power Cycle, I cannot remember 100% for certain but 3-5 can be skipped with a menu Reboot or Red Button Reset, both which should be done first and only do the actual listing 3-5 after those two options fail.

So before doing the above, do this first:

This is the reason why hitting the DVR button before all the drives are detected is missing the Other Devices section and why disconnecting/connecting the EHD's would be the only way to get the Other Devices section to show up.

Thanks JohnGalt1234 - That's interesting. I wonder are the Boot Strap versions different between a Hopper 3 only and a Hopper 3 with Hopper Plus setup as I have the later. I guess when charlesrshell is able to since he has both setups, he can do the test. Unless the bootstrap version is tied to when the specific Hopper 3 is manufactured, in my case, mines is from February 2016 when it was installed.

At least Google Search AI is saying the bootstrap version will never change and unique to each Hopper 3.

This is probably why different people seem to either have the issue or they don't because the bootstrap code could also be tied to the hardware revision and
components other than the internal HD.
