HD picture quality on Directv

I presently have Voom. I am considering leaving them and getting Directv for the HD channels. Does anyone who has the HD package have problems with the quality of the picture?

Don't want to discuss any aspect of the standard channels, as I have had them before and I know what they look like.

Since I've never done a side by side to make sure, but I think D*'s HD PQ isn't the best that it could be. What makes me say that is some DHDT programms where there's a LOT of motion, a scene with a flock of birds taking off comes to mind, boy that scene is pixelated all over the place, horrible. But what I'd call regular scenes look OK to me.

I've had Comcast, E* and D* for HD and that's the order that I'd rate them, but D* isn't bad enough for me to want to switch. And once I get my HD Tivo I'd probably never leave

I've just installed DirecTV HD. The picture quality seems excellent - although I have never seen VOOM or DishNetwork. I will say that the CBS HD channel was not very good during this past weekends Masters golf tournament. The sound went out frequently and the picture became "blocky" as though I had a weak signal a lot.

I Have Directv HD & Voom. With Voom On My LCD HD Projector At Times I Get The Screen Door Effect. But With DirectTV HD I Don't. The Picture Quality On Directv Is Way Better.

D* HD picture is more sharp, and detailed than VOOM's. I love all of VOOM's HD channels, but if I could only have one sat system, it would be D*. The Hd, and Sd just look better.

Please don't go with Dish! They have the worst HD receivers on the market, esp. the 921 and 811. DirecTV's are the best, in terms of quality, ease of use, set-up, and most imporntantly software/firmware. DirecTVs HD is great, sometimes it does get pixelated, but not that much. The have the highest potential of adding more HD the soonest, over Dish. I expect them to pick up INHD 1&2 and others soon, as they press forward into "doubling our HD line-up by year end". go with DirecTV for HD and please get an HD DirecTivo.

Disagree Vooms PQ Is Soft. Directv PQ Sharper In Both HD & SD.

I have DirecTV HD and I think the HD pq on DirecTV is very good on my 65" TV. The stuff that is specifically shot in HD (like content on Discovery-HD & HDNet) is superb.
The other content (like movies) has been transferred from film to HD. It's not as sharp as the stuff that is shot in HD but still better than DVD quality. Also, I have noticed motion artifacts on some of the HD stuff, but that is to be expected on anything that appears in 1080i because it's interlaced. You're going to get that on from any HD provider. As for CBS-HD, they have problems. I frequently have audio drop-outs and picture problems on that channel. Everything else is good though.

Unless you want shoddy crappy customer service and equipment that fails horribly, DO NOT go to E*!!

D* has very stable equipment and the PQ will be much better once the new sat goes into orbit next month. I'm not sure on HD PQ, but the SD is MUCH better on D*.

I have a Directv triple LNB system already installed. I have not bought the HD reciever as yet but plan to within the next couple of weeks. I appreciate the input from you guys.

i see D* is offering HD for $399. i already have 3-lnb so i wouldn't need that. what exactly does D* HD get me, content-wise? do i then need antenna for otr hd broadcasts? i have a 42" JVC ED plasma that i'd like to see better PQ on and I'm not sure the HD upgrade would get me that. Thanks.

I have a question about the new Triple LNB dish: Since the switch is built in to the "head" on the end of the dish's arm, how do you support cascading switches to handle more than four satellite conntections, say an HD Tivo and three additonal SD boxes? Or, is this a application that requires using the previous generation dish with three separate LNBs?

You get a multiswitch, like what's on this page, http://www.valueelectronics.com/accessories.htm.

You feed the four outputs of the phase III dish into the multiswitch and get 8 out, the one I have will even diplex in an OTA feed.

The PQ of Direct at present is atrocious. I have had Direct for years and I just cancelled their HD package because I get everything I need from Time Warner cable.

You wanna talk about beautiful HD, you should see INHD 1 and 2. they are pristine, to say the least.

I have had Dish and it is soft. I have Direct and their PQ is in the crapper right now, and they are hoping that Direct 7s will save that situation. The only service I cannot comment on is Voom.

Be careful, that's borderline flamebait. Those are the two reasons I left D* for E*. Of course anyone else's experience may vary.

A couple of problems with this statement.
1: At this time, D* DEFINITELY doesn't have the potential for adding more HD as they're more strapped for bandwidth than E* currently is. D7S may ease up on compression a little and enable them to do more LIL, but not much else.
2: INHD is coming nowhere near a DBS provider anytime soon as it was started by the cable industry(INDemand, LLC.). Notice how all of their advertisments state "Only On Digital Cable". That's done very deliberately to tell people that if you want INHD 1&2, you've gotta dump your dish and call your local cable monopoly.

I agree, right now D* is stuck. But the plan that's been floating around is that D7S will allow D* to move a number of LIL's that are on 101 now, that have been 'warned' was a temporay situation, making room for some more HD channels. At least we're hoping that's what the plan is
