can a HD VIP211K reciever for dishnetwork still work on a regular SD dish? and if so how, what satellites will it have to be on. not being used on a HD tv.

The "Dish" does not determine HD/SD. The same Dish set-up that gets HD, gets SD.
Any Dish receiver that can get HD programming can also get SD programming. In the case of the VIP211K, it can get signals from any of the satellites. (There are some older receivers that can not)
So in your case, you will get SD programming, HD if you want it, and from any satellites. Generally, you must either be on the 61.5/72/77 satellites, or the 119/110/129 satellites to get all your programming. Technically if you do not want to get HD programming you may not need all three, but Dish will want you to have all three because otherwise they would need to come back when you do need HD, or if they move a channel to another satellite.

says i got signal but when checking channels it just comes up with the channel title on top like usual but its just a black screen, not sure what i'm doing wrong

Did you buy the receiver and plug it in, or did a tech come to your home?
If you got the receiver on your own, press menu 6-1-1 and run a check switch.
tell us the satellite numbers that show up
worth a shot.

after check switch it says something about not having all the satellites and if i push save i will lose some channels, does this just mean i won't get HD channels? afraid to push save cause not sure it i can undo it after i hit it.

You are going to need a tech to visit your home, or try re-pointing the dish by yourself.
The reason why you are seeing black channels is due to those missing satellites.

When was that dish installed or the last time a tech came in for service?

You don't say where your located and what sat's your dish is pointing at. If your pointing at the EARC and the check switch says Dish 500, it thinks your pointing at 61.5, 119 and 122. This happened to me when I replaced my 722 last Feb. What I was told to do was to go to the point Dish and select 72.7 and then select Done. This then downloaded all the info for the EARC.

scottjessica, will you send me a Private Message with your phone number or account number? I want to see what your account shows you have installed

I may also give you a call if this hasn't been taken care of to get some more info from you.
