Hi Folks,

This is ECruzBUD, Eugene.

I'm trying to help my older brother in Napa, California.

He said he does NOT have COMCAST Cable anymore, TOO EXPENSIVE.

So, I'm trying to come up with the OTA devices for him, or with the indoor antenna.
His wife has a 50 or 54 inch HD-TV flat screen.

On ebay I saw a indoor antenna that you stick on the wall, and plug
right into the HD-TV set. Or into a STB. The indoor antenna, they say
has 960 miles range.

And the STB on ebay is the
ATSC Tuner HD CONVERTER BOX DTV Digital box.

ebay item number: 222981262407

And as for the antenna on ebay.
ebay item number: 264479369745

The VERY SAD part that is IF I give him these stuff, he won't get
or cannot get CNN and FOX NEWS, ESPN and AMC-TV, SADLY.

What can I give him, ASAP.

Hope all helps with answers.

Besides, I'm NOT in the Napa, California area to TEST it out.

Thanks,
Eugene

There is no 960 mile range OTA antenna. Indoor or outdoor. 60 miles is considered good. Outside antennas are generally better than antennas inside attics, which are generally better than set top antennas.

You need to check their address with antennaweb.orb and see what stations are available and in what directions. Post that image here and we can help you.

Also, tell us the model TV. You probably don't need a converter box. And once we know more, if they want DVR service, we can guide you better.

Do they have good Internet service? A Roku might bring in almost all they want, for free. YouTube has a great deal of free stuff, as do other sites.

HI NavyChop, and Folks,

I do NOT know the model of my bother's wife's 50 or 54 inch HD-TV Flat screen.

They're using cell phones for internet, now since that they discontinued with
COMCAST that has both internet and TV. NONE, now.

Here's the screen shot from Antenna site that I looked up for Gerry in Napa.

Hi NavyChop and Folks,

Here are more post than I posted about Napa, California surrounding TV stations.

Here are screen shots from ebay that I mentioned in my FIRST Post.

Did you notice that 960 mile antenna also states 200 miles range and 60-80 miles range in the same auction listing? o_O:D

Hi FTA4PA,

I like you username :) That means you're also in PA.???

There are 3 of these on ebay.
2 whites ones
1 black one.
Maybe the same white one.

Eugene

The antenna is crap.

You probably don't need that STB. Get them to photograph the connectors on the back of the TV. If you see a coax connector, especially if marked "ant in" then just connect a decent antenna to it and they will get OTA.

Now, as to which OTA, I'll have to study your antennaweb results. Can't right now.

As to a DVR, that's another discussion after we determine what if any OTA stations you can get. That "PVR" is probably not the best choice. And we need to determine if an omni will work or if a rotor is needed.

Baby steps.

Yes, I am from Central PA. Agree with navychop that there are no 960 mile antennas. The curvature of the Earth simply won't allow a tv signal to travel that far under nornal atmospheric conditions. Also agree you need to get the model of your brother's tv and post it here. Likely it has a tuner capable of viewing ATSC OTA channels and he would not need a stand-alone box at all unless he wants to DVR. :) Is the zip code 94558 correct for your brother's location so we can get a rough estimate of what stations may be available?

NavyChop,

My brother in Napa says his wife's 54 inch HD-TV Flat screen has
coax cable connectors. Ant-In and Ant-Out and HDMI out, USB port and RCAs.

So, we're talking about my brother and his wife lives in Napa, California which you just saw in my recent post, the screen shot from Antenna website.

94558 is their zip code in Napa.

Again, I do NOT live there, but helping them.
He has 2 sons that can test it out and setup for him, as well.
Especially the one son who was in the Marines in San Diego, Calif.
should know this stuff, also.

Maybe he doesn't want STB with DVR. Because when he had
COMCAST, he probably used DVR on their box.
So, I don't know IF he wants to continue that style.

I'm only live up here in Seatac, WA.

Thanks,
Eugene

Since most stations are line of sight and under 40 miles from Napa, that antenna might actually give him enough channels to make him happy.
As Navy chop said, it's not a very good antenna and is UHF only and 40 miles might be near it's max range.
And like he pointed out, a roku box would give him thousanfs of free movies and tv shows as long as he has at least 6Mbs internet.

HI Wireless Engineer,

What is a roku box??? Is there a link to it that shows a picture and setup???
Again, my brother only use cell phone for internet. I don't know the name of that provider.

Wireless Engineer,

How about this roku??? It's NEW as a USB stick.

Would he only insert this into the USB port on his HD-TV????
And go-and-play from there???

See screenshot below from ebay.

Remember, no router, no internet connection from COMCAST CABLE TV,
except internet provider for his cell phone.

What do you think???

My brother just text me from Napa, Calif.

He said he'll look it up on his 50 or 54 inch HD-TV flat screen.

He said "It's a Vizio".

Now you know???

Let me know.

Thanks,
Eugene

I doubt he will be happy with cell Internet for Roku. But without knowing speed and caps, we can’t tell.

Marine sin should be able to settle all this or have a buddy who will.

40 miles for an indoor $8 antenna? I’d bet against it.

Hi Folks,

I just got a text message from my brother in Napa, Calif.
I asked him since that he does NOT have COMCAST Cable TV,
does he still have internet connection, like a router or a modem.

He said in his reply is:

"Yep, I can watch most TV shows on YouTube TV and or Hulu."

Any ideas???

Now can I give him that roku USB stick to run and play on his
Vizio HD-TV???

Hi Folks,

It looks like, and I found out that my brother in Napa, California is fine.
I do not know what he's using but I'm showing you a screenshot of his
text message, and you can see it yourself.
You might think that he's alright and don't need to help him.
Waste of time. I thought he needed help when he said
"NO COMCAST CABLE TV", made me thought that he can't
use his Vizio TV. But apparently he does for other channels.

My text message to my brother is in BLUE

My brother 's text message in Napa is in WHITE.

Thanks,
Eugene
