I know just enough to be dangerous. When I set my HR20 to Native I believe it displays the actual transmission signal received. Discovery HD Theatre shows 1080i, ESPN shows 720p, NGC shows 720p, and all the upconverted channels show 1080i. The ESPN & NGC 720p shows look pretty good too.

Why does Discovery HD at 1080i looks SO much better than all the rest of 1080i? HD Theatre is the best looking 1081i out there. I hear that 720p is better for action than 1080i, so sure that is why sports (action) uses 720p... Someone, please explain why 1080i is better in some instances, but not others.......

Both have their pros and cons, 720p is good for sports, but many will say(including me) that CBS NFL at 1080i is the best PQ out there. I like native on the rcvr because it passes thru whatever the channels is to your tv and lets the tv tuner do the work changing it to ITS native.

I recommend you use google and WIKI for 1080i and 720p to get really good facts.

I just don't understand why HD Theatre looks so good in 1080i and other 1080i looks subpar?

I THINK that Theatre is the only channel D* passes at 1920x1080i. Others are downrezzed to 1280x1080i.

On other providers like Dish, HDNet and HD Theatre both look good. UHD has issues with macroblocking just like most NBC stuff.

I think once you see more 1080i stuff on D* with the new sat, you wont see the difference.

I have a 720p Sammy DLP. When I bought the set (its a third gen I believe, HLP-4663) the prevailing opinion was that it would be hard to tell the difference in PQ between 1080i and 720p.

1) Is this true?
2) Is there a noticeable difference in PQ between 1080p and 720p?

Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding, Ding... :up

I have heard many times that D* down reszes to 1280X1080 on their 1080i channels with the exception of HD Theater.

I have heard and believe myself, that the differences between 720p and 1080i are not noticeable on televisions that are under 40", unless you sit extremely close. The bigger the television the more noticeable the difference, unless you have the television in an insanely large room where you are more than 10 ft. away.

I can NOT notice a difference between 720 and 1080. The first 6months or so I really centered on these issues. Now that Im at year 3 with HD, I dont even sweat it. All I car about is more more more.

Plus, once you own a BR or HDDVD player, youll be disappointed in network HD :D
