HITS Goes Terrestrial

HITS has announced a national terrestrial fiber distribution service for delivering video programming to cable MSOs. The fiber network is designed to help MSOs broaden their HD offerings as well as future iTV, 3DTV and other services.

I wish that 3DTV was a typo error and it said 4DTV instead!

Maybe 4DTV could be in the "other services".

If HITS are going fibre, then that is going to mean the end of our access to the W5 4DTV channels..

I wonder if Mike Kohl will mention this on the Sat Talk show on Access America tonight..

Is this thing just "announced" or already in place and waiting to turn the switch on???

I am not sure if this is a private dedicated system that has to be/was built or some other network already out there?

Its not the end. This will be a great offering for semi larger cities that have real fiber infrastructure in place. However if you have been reading the news you would already know that in many parts of rural america, high speed fiber capacity is not readily available. Many of the smaller cable television providers are in these smaller cities and do not have access or more importantly can not afford to have a fiber feed run to there head ends. These providers are the target market for using HITS. It is unlikely that W5 will be going any ware any time soon because of this information.

The most likely thing to kill W5 will be the switch to a more efficient modulation standard that our 4DTV receivers can not get.

W5 ain't going anywhere yet. There are way too many affiliates that have systems in place and aren't going to spend a fortune rebuilding the plant for fiber. Remember allot of HITS customers are small rural cable companies that use HITS for their headend more or less. There working on a shoestring budget to start with and don't have costs for a full blown plant.
