I tried to transfer my recordings from a Hopper 1 to a Hopper 3 with an Ethernet cable and it failed. According to Dish the hard drive is bad in the hopper 1. If I use an external hard drive to download my recordings, am I going to be able to download from a bad hard drive and retrieve those recordings?

If you're experiencing harddrive failure on the Hopper 1 and thats why its being replaced, then it will not transfer recordings.

If you send me your RCAID in a private message, I can take a look.

Yes. But in my experience, you MIGHT be able to save a few to transfer over.

BUT- If you cannot watch anything from that H2000, then taps.

If the Hopper 1 still used EXT3 format, then as a last resort you can connect both to a Linux system and use Dolphin or other file transfer program that transfers an entire directory including permissions to the other drive after the Hopper 3 has formatted the new drive.

It's not fast, but you can queue up a few recordings at a time, to get an overpriced Big Mac and come back for the next st.
