Hopper renting pay per views, BY ITSELF

My original Hopper and 2 Joey system has been doing a lot of strange things lately. Most of what I've been seeing has been documented in other threads. One problem that I have not seen reported by anyone else is pay per view movies that rent themselves.

A month or two ago I was surfing channels and noticed two side by side pay movies in the guide as being rented. One was GI Joe Retaliation and I don't remember what the other one was. I thought ok bank error in my favor and recorded both. I did watch the GI Joe movie but deleted the other. Of course when I looked at my next bill I was charged for both. I called and was able to get both credited even though at first the person didn't seem to believe me. I'm not sure I would believe me either. This week I turned on one of the tv's and a pay Smurf's movie was on. We don't have kids and I wouldn't watch a Smurf's movie even if it was free:) Then last night another pay movie (Prisoners) automatically recorded itself on the dvr. I noticed it recording and looked at the guide which showed an all day rental. My wife and I rarely if ever rent any movies. We have over 300 movies saved on EHD's from free previews so there's no need to pay for anything.

One of my first thoughts was that one of my neighbors was renting movies and the remote commands were controlling my system. Correct me if I'm wrong but with the Hopper remotes have to be paired to operate the system. Other non-paired remotes will not work with the exception of IR universal remotes. With my older receivers I remember you could change a code or remote channel number if you were getting neighbor interference.

Any ideas?? Dish may not believe me this time if I call to get credit for more movies that we supposedly didn't buy.

Does anyone else have access to your Mydish.com log in information? Is ir enabled in the remote manager and do you use a DVD player or any other remotes frequently? I highly doubt it's a different remote due to the multiple confirmation screens that must be navigated but worth a check.

Can't you require a PIN be entered before renting, or set your max $ allowed for rentals to zero?

I do have infrared enabled for two universal remotes that I use. I suppose anything is possible but I would have a hard time believing a neighbors IR signal could be reaching my receivers. The universal remotes do control other components but 98% of the time I only use them for Dish. And as far as I know no one else would have access to my Dish account.

I have now set parental controls to require a pass code to purchase anything. I hope that helps. There were no restrictions set prior to that.

I noticed Prisoners is in my purchase history for $5.99:( The Smurf movie was not there.

I meant other ir remote in your home may be controlling the Hopper while the TV is on a different input.

It's just my wife and I. The only things she would watch in another room would be sat. based(dvr, sat. channels). We rarely use our other IR components like dvd and blue ray players.

I noticed that Prisoners was expired on the dvr this morning. Apparently you only have 24 hrs. or so to watch them once they download/record. So now I was charged $5.99 for something I can't even watch anymore. Oh well, I didn't want it anyway and will be asking for a credit. I also noticed that Dobie Gillis (old b/w show from the 60's) recorded at 4:30 this morning on one of our OTA sub channels. My wife swears that she didn't record it so it seems that the DVR is also recording other things by itself besides pay per views.

Someone told me that if I un-pair my remotes and then re-pair them again the system will assign a new remote channel. I'm going to try that today.

I only did a search once. I was looking for Miracle on 34th Street. I now have a dozen recordings I did not now I requested, with miracle in the title. I did not realize I had actually told it to record anything. The only pay per view that came up, ironically was Miracle on 34th St. I was asked to authorize the charge, which I rejected and it did not record.

so did you do a search?

Yes we do use the search function fairly often but not for any of the movies or shows that have recorded. I also haven't seen a screen asking to accept or cancel the pay movies unless it came on when I wasn't viewing that particular TV. If I did see it I would have canceled for sure.

I noticed another movie in the rental folder today that neither of us downloaded. Of course it wasn't a free one:(

Yes our WIFI is secure. That was one of the first things I thought of too. It really does seem at this point like someone is accessing the account somehow. My other thought was that we were getting the movies and charges that someone on another account ordered but processed to our account by mistake. I've seen stranger things happen.

I'm really scratching my head over this one.

Could it be a neighbor's RF remote is reaching to your receiver, and they are doing the ordering and it is happening on both theirs and your receiver?

This was my first thought. I remember having an issue with a 622 receiver where it would turn itself off and change channels at random. After doing some research on that I finally figured out it was my neighbors. I changed the remote address and the problem stopped.

This weekend I un-paired and then re-paired all three Dish RF remotes twice each. I was told by someone that doing that changes the remote channel. I also have an RF base station that is paired to one of my rf universal remotes. I use that to control the Hopper downstairs. Tonight I will be changing the channel on that.

Maybe DIRT can track down what receiver or remote IP actually ordered the PPVs?

I'm going to be calling Dish to get credit for the two movies that have been charged to my account. I will ask them this question.

FYI, I also changed the user name and password for my account on Dish's site.

UHF remote? these do have a heck of a long range. Wouldnt be a stretch as remote channel 1 is default.

I have the RF base station set to ch. 4 or 6. Can someone confirm what I was told about pairing and un-pairing changing the channel for the Hopper/Joey RF remotes??

This thread reminds me of the recent Parks and Recreation episode. You may have a similar problem. :D

"...and there's a malfunction with the TV. Where it keeps ordering porno. Like a ton of porno. Like how can someone watch that much porno in one sitting. Only when you're out of the house. So if you see it on the bill, that's why."
