How frequently can I activate/deactivate receivers?

I'm about to get hooked up with DTV and a thought occurred to me. I'm getting a four room setup, of which two rooms are used very infrequently.

How often can I activate and reactivate receivers in those two rooms? Will DTV prorate my bill accordingly? Will there be any additional charges?

I have read where they have been requiring a one year contract everytime you add a receiver onto your account even if it is a used receiver. I do not know all the details.
