I still do not see the point of killing him off. It is a comedy not a drama. It is not like he was a show regular, they could have him appear any time they needed him. Maybe he no longer wanted to be on retainer in real life for appearances on the show or something.

Maybe we are not supposed to see the point just yet. This show is known for making changes and then referring to them weeks or months later as a tool for showing usa some kind of growth in the character. Heck it may even tie into Barney's issues with not knowing about his real father.

The day he actually meets her is they day they announce cancellation.

I don'ty know about that. I think the show could survive for several seasons telling the story of their romance----and developing the other characters. after all Watching the early ad campaign and even the pilot episode I just assumed that Robin was the mother and the show was about that realtionship and as it turned out there is so much more.

I kind of was hoping for Zoey, but not surprised. Now there is no reason to continue the relationship. Lets move on... :)

And this week's episode was only ok. Did not wow me.

I knew it wasn't Zoey. He ends up marrying the girl with the umbrella who was the roommate of the girl he went out with only once. Zoey has been married.

They are walking on a knife edge. As long as the show is doing well in ratings, they can't afford to introduce her. That would be a jump the shark moment and the producers would have a clear path to series end.

OTOH, if the ratings tank, the show gets cancelled and the producers will need to scramble to tie up storylines. This is the gorilla in the room, and they will need to introduce her quickly in the 1 or 2 episodes they get to wrap things up.

On the positive side, series that have gone on this long usually get to go out on their own terms. If that is the case, they could get as much as a season to introduce Mom and let it play out, but it would still be the final season.

I would hope they get the full season, rather than two episodes. That would be a slap in the face to viewers. BUT obviously necessary if the ratings were to tank.

i don't know about that. I think this is the rare case of a show that started with a gimmick that actually outgrew that gimmick.

I have to admit though that I cannot prove that and I cannot think of anothers how that managed to do that.
