How long should a 2TB WD Elements external drive take to format on a 922?

I plugged the 2TB drive into the 922 at 7:30AM this morning. A notice popped up on the 922 that the drive needed to be formatted. It's now just after 11AM (3.5 hours) and the message "USB storage device is formatting, please wait..." is still on the screen. Could it still be formatting? I'm debating resetting the receiver and starting over.

Thanks,

- Paul

I have the same drive as well as a 1tb Essential connected to my 922. When I added the 2tb it only took a few minutes for it to format and become usable on the receiver. Is this the first EHD that you have used on the 922? If so you might want to call cs or tech support to have them send a re-hit (re-authorization) to the receiver. Another thing to try is plugging in the powered up EHD with the 922 turned off and then turn it on. This worked for me one time. You can also try doing a front panel reset with the EHD plugged in.

There are a lot of threads about EHD problems and troubleshooting tricks. If you do a search you might find some other things to try.

Thanks for the tips JeffN9. This was the second EHD connected to the 922. The first was an older 500GB WD MyBook that was originally formatted on my old 622. I resolved my formatting problem by unplugging the MyBook drive and restarting the 922 with just the 2TB drive. It formatted in a few minutes without problems. I then plugged my 500GB drive back in and all is good. My goal is to move all of the data from the nearly full 500GB drive onto the new drive. Unfortunately, I found that you can't copy directly from EHD to EHD, so the process moving from EHD1 to 922 to EHD2 will take several days of copying movies in groups.

Thanks,

Not with a Dish receiver, but you certainly CAN (and I did) do it with Linux. ;) I just booted up a LiveCD of Scientific Linux 5.4 IIRC, and then (logged in as root) dragged/dropped. Newer versions of Scientific Linux (I tried the 6.0 LiveCD) won't let you log in as root and subsequently change the ownership of files copied via the GUI, so I wouldn't recommend that unless you're facile with the "chown" command.
