How much is the Hopper upgrade costing you?

I called Dish for the first time on 2/22/12. I asked about a 922 on the phone and if I would have the ability to watch DVR anywhere in the home. Being new I trust the man on the phone that he is giving me a great product for the next 2 years. Boy was a burned. The UI on my 722k is like out of the dark ages. Come one people, how am I supposed to navigate this garbage for the next 2 years. I call back and request the Hopper and they tell me it's $700. Since I am leasing equipment installed on 2/24 you would think I could swap out for something a little more current. These boxes are no better than the carp Comcast was providing me. Pretty amazed at how little Dish cares about the end user. They were all happy on the phone and the next day it's a totally different company once you agree to the contract. I am considering biting the bullet and dropping $400 to cancel my agreement on principal alone. Any advice other then grabbing my ankles?

i think usually by the end of the first year, you start qualifying for upgrade offers. Basically around the time Dish recoups some of their install costs. It still seems to vary a little from that, but it's a reasonable guess.

Option 1) Be patient and wait till you qualify for upgrades and enjoy the system you signed up for. If they requalify customers earlier, you may find you don't have to wait that long. CSRs were only allowed to sell the equipment on 3/15. You signed up too early. They weren't even trained to provide customer service on the new equipment when you signed up. There's nothing the CSR could say any different at the time.
Option 2) pay termination fee
Option 3) beg them to waive termination fee

Aside from the antiquated UI, the 722 line of receivers are just about the most functional, stable and feature-rich receivers Dish has produced. Function over form. You might just learn to appreciate it for what it is.

Hi Seth, and welcome to the forum.

Yes, this is certainly the place you can ask questions and learn all about Dish and other providers in their forums as well. You have to understand that it is not all that unusual for us to see a first post from someone who takes a very negative tone, posting very negative comments, and then never returning. A lot of these could be spam/troll type of activity simply posted by someone with ulterior motives. Not saying you are in that category. Just making you aware of why there would be some hesitation to take a first post at face value when it comes across so negative. For a first post it did come across pretty harshly. :)

dare2be's post is spot-on. The 722 may not have the prettiest UI but it is a very solid DVR box that most any company out there cannot match in terms of functionality. Give it a little time, I also think you will learn to appreciate how good it is compared to most options out there.

And hang out with us and get to know us a little better and you'll see that there are a lot of cool people on here who are extremely helpful. I'm sure you'll come to appreciate all our little quirks and idiosyncrasies also. ;)

Since you are new here and think you have a honest gripe, you should contact one of the Dirt team (Dish Internet Response Team). They are actual employes of Dish. There names will be in Red. PM one of them with either your account number or telephone number. If you have the name of the person from Dish who contacted you, let them know. If you go to the very top of the forum, you will see a list of people on line. There names will be in Red. Just PM one of them. They are the good guys/gals.

The 1st try with a CSR they offer me the upgrades of 1H / 2J for $100.
Ask for Dish Retention agent and he give me 1H / 2J for no cost and free installation.
I keep negotiating with him and got CineMax/Stars/Show + BB Home for 3 months included.
(Dish customer for 7 yrs, currently not in contract and never been late in payments)

I think I'll try to get HBO free for 6 months when I upgrade next month. I don't mind paying the $100 but would like some free movies to start recording!

I don't want to sound like a Dish fanboy but you bashed one of Dish's best working receivers they've ever made. I find it hard to believe and cable company has a better DVR than the 722. That being said, if the 722 was not what you were expecting there are suome cases where you are allowed to swap to different equipment. Obviously there is a time frame to do it and you would need to talk to the righ person at Dish.

If you are a couple months into the contract then you are out of luck. Too much time has passed for swapping out for free. You also haven't been with Dish long enough for them to give you a discounted upgrade. I would also like to know if you did any research on the equipment you were interested in? If the UI was important to you I would think you would have made sure you knew what you were getting ahead of time. That's just me though.

The 722K is a decent receiver, but what I get out of Seth's post is "and if I would have the ability to watch DVR anywhere in the home". The 722K or the 922 can't do this .. the 722 only has the one hd and one sd extension .. and that doesnt cover seth's "anywhere in the home".
Another thing .. most folks are just not technically savy and MUST rely on customer service .. he got sold a bill of goods ..what Seth wanted didnt even exist with DISH until mid march when the hopper / joey was released .. The receiver may work well, but im with Seth that 722 menu / gide structure is pathetic .. it is so minimalistic ....... cant even customize a color scheme ..

Customer tad less than a year .. upgrade cost for 1 hopper 1 joey from Dish Administration was 400.00 ..


For a little more you can purchase one online.Keep your eyes on EBay,Dish Depot,Solid Signal.Good Luck!.:)


If for any reason you are thinking about buying a " receiver" on EBay always check the receiver ID# with DISH to make sure someone is not trying to sell you their "leased receiver"!.:eek::rolleyes:

I'm more about usability, functionality, and reliability over being able to change colors. But that's just me. :)

It doesn't make a lick of sense buying a Dish dvr. Unlike buying a Tivo with lifetime service for cable, there is no savings in fees and the dvr is only good with Dish Network service. What good is not having a contract when the equipment only works with the one service anyway? Then you have to find another person who doesn't want a contract to buy the dvr from you.

Actually ,Dishdepot will let you trade them back in for credit towards another new receiver. So anytime you want to upgrade to the latest , greatest, you have a way to upgrade through them. I 've done it that way since 2003.

Will they let you trade in Dish equipment for Direct equipment and vice versa? Otherwise my comment about being tied to one service still stands. And there is still no cost savings involved with buying your own equipment.

2H & 4J for $200, including installation. Long-time customer with America's Everything and maintenance plan. Also, purchased Joey #5 for $120 to work around 6 receiver lease limit. Self-installing and activating today.
