How to Deactivate receiver?

I got a Hd receiver from the old place i use to live, the owners mother gave the receiver to me.Because there was no use of it for years,i tried to activate it but DTV said the person has to Deactivate it first, so now the guy is out of reach. I was wondering is there any way that i can deactivate it??? i know his name but i don't know his contact number. Is there any other way i can do this?

well, if he has it active, it should be working if you hook it up. if it don't work, then either it is bad or he has deactivated it.

in any case, you can call D and have them send you a new HD RX. if you been with them a while you can probably get it for the cost of shipping or maybe even completely free.
