It's actually a very good idea. It removes a lot of heat from the inside, and if there is an issue with the power supply, it's an easy fix.

Looks like Im one of the few who's not doing hand stands about this machine.
Im coming from an HR24 straight to the HR44.
While I love the new size of the 44, thats about it.
Extra tuners is real nice.
Suggestions on what programs you like, nice too.
As far as speed there is no difference between
my Hr24 and the HR44. My experience of course.
That said, I love having the latest units.
But to be honest this unit is not groundbreaking
or a big step up from the HR24.
I love Direc...the HD dvrs are good
the hopper with sling, to me, is groundbreaking.
Not to stir the pot by loyalists...I have both
services..I will always tell the honest truth
about each..My humble opinion.

do tell more... the ability of the HR34 remote to control other devices was already limited enough.. it gets worse with the 44?
I've had the HR24, I've had the HR34 and now the HR44 and I think the HR44 is a much nicer unit.. Definitely notice a speed difference, noticed that right away. When I had the HR34, I was having problems with freezing issues. I'd be watching TV and it would just freeze for a few seconds, then come right back. Other times it would lock up completely where I had to either turn the channel or reset the receiver. It was still doing this after about 5 tech visits, who pretty much replaced everything, still didn't fix the issue. So, after all of the trouble DIRECTV upgraded me to the HR44 for Free, along with 3 new clients and thus far I haven't experienced the issues that I was having with the HR34. I actually like the remote better, I like the size of the DVR, it's small and I just like how fast it operates. I noticed a difference instantly. I guess the problems worked out for the best, as I got the nicer unit, in my opinion. I will say I'm not crazy about the Clients, I think I'd rather just have individual receivers.

I'm really liking the feel of my HR44's remote, as well. And, of course, I have it programmed to control my Panny plasma and Onkyo AVR, too.

Mine has controlled everything I've programmed it for so far. Just took out an old remote to compare the feel, Imo, the new one is far more ergonomic.
