I am still pretty new to FTA, and I am loving every minute of it... that is, when actually getting to watch something, not being aggrivated about dish pointing ;)

In my various searches about FTA, I have discovered its relative ease of Nagravision hacking, which I am sure everyone here knows about. I personally find the idea of service theft, offensive.

However, I do see one really good thing about it.

When Nagravision 2 rolls out in full force (which looks to be very soon from what I gather), the secondary market is going to get flooded with recievers and hardware. Nevermind the primary market, because the demand is going to drop, and you know what happens to prices then :)

I cannot wait to get my next Pansat or Fortec for dirt cheap from some idiot who stole DN or BEV and thinks the box is now worthless.... worthless for him mabey, but not for me :)

I've been saying that for a while, and while it won't stop the most determined of thieves it will give good homes to the "useless" FTA receivers which is definitely good news for us :)

I dont see why not, as far as i can see, its just an altered software image, I would think you just put the original software back in, and be on your way.

since the Nagra2 card swap is in full force...by Fall you should see oodles of FTA receivers out there.
ExpressVu is doing the card swap at a fever pitch...I think all thery have left are the regular subs (they already did NFL, Porn, and movies). Dish is trucking along too :)

Scade is right...you can put the origianl software abck in it no problems.

I totally agree. I think we'll get along just fine :D

Cant wait to get a Pansat 2500a for every room of my house for $50 ;) Funny, since I work for my cable company, and I get all the channels for free from cable (except PPV), yet I still yearn for more and more channels ;)

Yep, totally agree with you all. I have been over to the "dark side" just to fool around, however its funny....I still go back to good ole true FTA everytime. Theres something about finding new stuff, feeds, etc (kind of like a present) that all those signal theives just don't get. I was reading a testimonial from an FTA fan who was also a HAM radio buff. He said this hobby is just like HAM, same thing, getting a kick out of finding something new and buying new equipment to do it. And the funniest thing is, after I find something, I might watch it a bit, but for the most part, I don't watch alot of tv at all.

Yea, I totally understand that thought, I am also an Amateur Radio Operator, sadly, I dont do it much anymore, but I still fire up the ole rig now and then just to see whats out there.

I am also a HAM and I do agree that FTA has similar attraction to those of us that like to legally play in the airwaves - too bad my HAM license does not allow mt to transmit with my little dish! :)

You can use the dish for ham radio on 10GHz ham band or just work on ham radio satellite on 2.3 GHz band!!

Of course you will have to to keep track low orbit OSCAR satellites.

Most mode are SSB and some FM and data and some very rare digital video modes. :yes

Have fun Dxing and 73's to all you guys out there! ;)

Cheap receivers will depend on effectiveness of Nag2

I'm not convinced that the DA's with modified equipment will be quick to sell. They will hold off on selling those boxes until it becomes an absolute fact that Nag 2 cannot be compromised. In addition to this, the receivers may still work on other channels not affiliated with D. or not using Nag 2. In addition, if the slime balls are willing to steal signals, why wouldn't they try to dump their receiver on someone and still claim that the box is capable of getting extra channels? They may still try to get top dollar. All I'm trying to say is that someone will try to break Nag2, and others will sit back and wait for a while. So don't expect cheap boxes anytime soon. If nag2 is as good as DTV's system, then we may start to see cheap receivers by this time next year. (the opinion here does not necessarily reflect the views of this forum or it's members yada yada yada).

I agree with rjc - I think that it will not make a difference, also at some point this encryption will also get defeated - there is nothing that can not be - I have spend may years in the computer security arena and there is no such thing as a secure program.

i don't think encrypted c-band (VC/VCII/VCII+) has ever been hacked, and that is decades old. and to my knowledge, neither has Digicipher/DCII.

Here are some of the others I know off the top of my head outside of D*, E*, and BUD, but I don't know their status on security.

PowerVu/PowerVu+
Cryptoworks
Codicrypt
Irdeto/Irdeto 1/Irdeto 2
Conax
Wegener
Viaccess/Viaccess 2.3/2.4/2.5
Videoguard
Mediaguard
RAS
MDS
BISS
Canal+
SECA

I know Videocipher (all versions, I believe) has been hacked (I knew someone with a "Black VCII" module a few years back), but I believe that is the only one other than Nagravision 1 that is readily available.

I am thinking that Irdeto 1 may also have been (hence the progression to 2), as well as Viaccess (for the same reason), but I have no proof of this.

LOL - VCII was hacked almost from the getgo. Of the 1.9million VCII boards manufactured, there were only abot 550,000 that were ever authorized.

Yes VCII - the reason that VCII+ exists.

It would require changing out all of the decrypt modules for most of the cable companies across the country. As things are migrating to Digicipher II and PowerVu anyways, might as well keep the old VCs around for now, instead of doing a full force rollout.

The number of VC recievers at the office seems to be declining every month.. While we gained a few PowerVus the other day..

Besides, you still need an "expensive" C-band dish, and Videocipher capable reciever to do it.
