I just switched from comcast to Dish....

Just to be sure, have you checked to see what the output of your 722 is set to? The TV doesn't matter so much, it's the output of the 722 that needs to be set properly. The 722 will output 1080I, 720P, 480P, or 480I and that is adjustable through the menu...
 
Maybe try changing your settings on the TV to default and the setting on the receiver to default. From there you can see if there are other changes to be made.
 
Make sure the tv's format setting is not zoomed or stretched, try switching the 722 to a different hdmi input or try a set of component cables to the tv instead. It is not unheard of for an input to go bad on a tv.

Then all that's left is try moving the 211 to the 722's place and if the picture improves the 722 may be bad if not, get Dish out to trouble shoot the install. There should not be that much difference in picture quality between cable and Dish depending on how many channels the cable company was squeezing in.

How does the 211's picture look on your other HDTV? I have a 722 and 2 211's along with Cox connected to a 60in LG LED, 50in LG plasma and a 40in Vizio LCD. Dish looks great on all of them, as good as OTA and better than Cox HD. Cox HD is pretty good around here with Fiber runs to all their local hubs, before changing to Coax for the house runs.
 
My advice here before burning the last tech out for a trouble call is to swap out the TV with another a friends or something and verify that it is in fact the TV. If its the TV then you can't blame the Dish system and therefore you shouldn't be calling them on it rather a Audio/Video specialist or store and pay them to come fix it.
 
Some of you guys are insulting the OP... From his responses, he's not a tech-neophyte and seems to know what he's doing. People have pointed out all the things to look at and unless the OP isn't being truthful, he's already got everything set up properly. I've never seen Comcast to know what their PQ looks like (only experience with Time Warner, D*, and E*) but I respect those who do have, or had, both, and say that Dish's PQ is better. I'm at a loss as to what the problem is too....
 
I'm confused. You have a 722 and one or two 211s?

722-> HDTV
211-> HDTV(?)
211-> 4x3 TV(?)

Is the problem only on one receiver/TV or is it more than one? The odds are against having two bad receivers, but it's possible one is bad. If it's just one receiver/TV swap receivers between rooms and see if the picture improves.
 
My TV is setup for 1080 16:9.. Always been set that way and it worked fine for Comcast. I can't believe that what worked for comcast (I dind;t really have to adjust much) doesn't work for Dish. IF it should be set a different way for dish then let me know what it should be set to. I'm certain that my TV is viewing it from input 3 whch is the HDMI input. I'm not totally familiar with Full Pixel but it's set at the best resolution right now. I don't see any other option to adjust anything else on my Sony. I've adjusted the picture and the settings within the picture.
How do I check to see if it's over scanning? The tech just made sure I got picture and left because he was late to his next appointment.
I just checked this morning and the HD is only minimally better than the HD channels with the local channels. Even with comcast the difference between normal and hd was extremely obvious!

Couple of things for you to verify
1) In setting check what is the HDTV setup is.
2) Verify from your guide or press info on dish remote & verify that you are actually on an HD channel & not its equivalent SD channel
3) Press # key on your dish remote & cycle through various aspect ratio & select the one that is for HD channel (I think its called "Full" or somethign like that) & not zoom or anything else.

I have Dish HD on 47 & 55 inch TVs & HD channels looks great on it.
 
I actually have Comcast and Dish at the same time, on the same TV, and I can say that the picture from Dish is marginally better, not tremendously worse....

Cable is regional so even if you did have comcast at some point in time you might not have the same experience as the OP. I agree that he seems to know how to use the TV. Comcast may have slightly better PQ than Dish in some areas. I think if you put several TV sets side by side with different providers most people wouldn't be able to point out which came from Dish, Direct, Comcast, etc...

In this case something is either set up wrong or the OP is imagining picture problems that aren't there. People's faces wouldn't just be inexplicably bigger on Dish than Comcast if everything is set up correctly. If the OP is confident that there really is a big picture problem than he needs a tech to come look at it.

It doesn't make sense to me though. Signal strength wouldn't make the picture look bad. It would either look normal or say no signal. The only other thing I can think of is that the OP is missing a satellite. I was recently having signal problems this summer on 129 because my original installer aimed that sat right though a tree limb. 129 happens to contain most of the HD on WA. It was ok when he first installed it but after the leaves grew in my hopper kept auto tuning to the SD channel because the HD version had no signal. Zach from Dirt had someone come out and move my Dish for me and now everything is fine. Maybe the OP is having a similar problem.
 
I have seen something similar on a service call I went to, we couldn't figure it out. I talked with another tech that went out there as well (and he has about 10yrs experience) and he thought it might be the electrical in the house. I don't recall why we ruled out the TV, but that could also have been the issue.

Thanks Hall. People don't get that I do now what i'm doing but just not a TV/cable freak who is aware of all the terminologies. It's set up correctly. It appears to me that the pics i'm getting might be a bit larger than what i was gettign through comcast. That kind of explains the non-sharp pictures and appearance that the pics are larger. The receiver and Tv are set correctly at optimization specs. I'll call dish to see what they have to say.

I tend to get long winded as everyone has different terminology and sometimes it can be the simplest thing, that everyone takes for granted is actually the problem
 
I still don't see where you have you checked to be sure the picture isn't zoomed from the Dish receiver? You threw me off when you said your TV was on 4:3 to tried changing it to 16X9..... That's what made some wonder if you were understanding all the settings..... It is something on your end, that I know. And since you have repeated a couple of times everything looks bigger, that sounds like a setting issue from the TV itself or from the Dish receiver.
 
The TV should be set to Normal and the 722 should also be set to normal. I'm not sure how to get your TV in the correct mode but pressing the '*' button (it's just to the left of '0') will step you through the available formats leaving the 722.
 
Try pushing the format button on the dish remote. It sounds like it may be zoomed....


The bottom of the remote. The star button. That's format. Cycle thru till it looks right.
 
Its been suggested and the OP has said they have used the format button on the remote for the 722 and the tv. Both are apparently set correctly.

i'll have to try putting the 211 on my TV. The 211's are on one HDTV and one on Standard. I plan to upgrade so they gave me the HD since it's downconvertable. The other TV has always had mediocre pics so i chalked it up as TV problem. But my TV worked well in HD with comcast so i expected the same. The 722 was set at 4:3#1. I changed it to 16:9 and the pic was a little better.

It feels like Dish outputs pics that are too big? the character on dish looks bigger than normal. I have TV and Dish controler set ar full screen or normal. Even the grey and black sides do not help the picture much.

Called dish from work and they wanted em to be in front of receiver to run some tests. So those with Dish, your dish produces crisp pics?

with the sony remote press home > settings > picture & display > screen > auto display area off > display area > full pixel
 
Look at what could be the problem, and try to eliminate it.

Bad receiver (actually something wrong with the receiver)? Swap the receiver. Does the problem stay with the TV or the 722?
Bad setting on the receiver? Swap the receiver. Does the problem follow the 722?
Bad TV? Put another source (the 211? a DVD player?) on the same cable/input. Does the problem remain?

It's either a setting on the TV and/or the receiver, or something is actually wrong.
