This week I am going to look into adding IPV6 support on our server. Since we moved to this server last year we have had IPV6 addresses available to us, but I have never used them.

While IPV4 works fine we should probably support both standards.

I am posting this now in case I screw something up, so later in the week when I activate IPV6 if it messes something up people will know why. And I have setup a special email address of ipv6 @ satelliteguys . us (Remove the spaces) for people to report any issues to me.

This work will happen mid week sometime, and I will update this post before I do anything. :)

IPv6 is one of the few areas of IT that I had ignored. I grok'd most of IPv4 but IPv6 was just something that my Corporation IT overlords never supported.

It works at home, so it would be faster to have SatGuys support IPv6 since most devices try that first, and fall back to IPv4 if it doesn't work. But DNS should be returning IPv4 addresses only if you haven't created the DNS entries for IPv6 addresses.

Thanks for keeping us informed, Scott.

Well, while I was waiting until later in the week, I set. it up on another site I host on the server (NewingtonWeather.COM) and it works..

So I just set it up on SatelliteGuys as well, and I am using an IPV6 only connection and its working. :)

Let me know if you see any issues, but we are now ipv4 and ipv6 enabled.

In case anyone wants to understand if they can leverage this:

If you pass all of that, it's probably seamless and you won't notice.

I don't have access for example, probably because of a trunk setup in my network. Probably dig into it later with Claude.

Interesting, my AT&T home internet is unhappy with some IPv6 features. Ditto with my Boost Mobile. Could be Safari on my iPhone settings…

Yeah, my ipv6 traffic dies at my Unifi Gateway, so definitely a problem there, I need to test direct to the ONT and verify it's not actually Cox. I'm close to pulling the trigger and upgrading my infrastructure to 2.5-10g anyways and making some other significant changes, so probably done messing w/ that for now.

When I checked out and about on my phone (Fi, so likely TMobile) I was passing all the tests.

Edit: oh, fun. Now my home connection is passing all the tests. Maybe there was a lease renewal or something.

Ok this is funny...My Internet Provider GoNetspeed just called me, as I have a static IP address. That static IP address is an IPV4 address. I didn't think they supported IPV6.

Anyways they just called and said "Hey we were going through our accounts and notice you have a static IP address and we noticed that we never assigned you a IPV6 static IP address as well.... can we add it and reboot your Fiber Connection? They said they didn't want to add it and knock me offline for a few minutes. How cool is that, I love my ISP.

I was like SURE! So sometime within the next 24 hours they are going to provision my fiber connection for both a static IPV4 and IPV6.

So soon I will have IPV6 as well.... now I just need to figure out how to setup my router to support it.

Time to put the learning cap on again...
