Jimbo thanks for the comments. It seems however you are speaking just for yourself? First I would be surprised if anybody watch's 16 tuners at one time. That's a question asked and answered by you. At least I hope so. I have 6 TV's all LCD.Two 4k sets. Four 1080P sets. I have two teenage young adults plus my wife. All seem to record crap all the time the 16 tuners makes that a snap. I. I mean I could get by with less. But I would like more . Not sure how it works with DTV but two Gene DVR's and a few clients would work. If allowed and it worked. One Gene for the Master bedroom and the theater room. Than one shared by the kids/adults. I have a wireless video sender I use for the workout room and the garage. So two clients two DVR's. Is that reasonable? Thanks
Were talking about Recording or watching i guess ... 16 DIFFERENT things at the SAME TIME ...
So your saying at 8 oclock your 2 teenagers and your wife and YOU all have 4 different shows that you have to record that are all on at the same time ....
Right.

No I have never used 16 tunes at the same time. But consider 4 people watching something. Anything. Each person while watching 1 thing, each record 1 thing. That's 8 tuners. If you wanted to start anything new or additional. Now you have conflicts and issues. Whats the max on the Gene? 5? Just the prime time anytime Records 4 channels. Using only 1 tuner. Again nice feature. 16 tuners is just a great feature. Most cars go 120 mph or more. Who drives that fast? A house that has 4 bathrooms. Can you really use them all at the same time? Good luck and peace out.

People are confusing recording a large number of shows (which I have no problem with) with having to record 16 items AT THE SAME TIME.
Thats the part I don't get.

I don't know if I even have 16 CHANNELS that I watch. let alone record.

But that's not what the 16 tuners are for. It's so you can watch live tv in multiple rooms while another watches Dish Anywhere and still being able to record multiple shows at once. Oh, and someone could be using the multi-screen feature as well, still not having any conflicts and it doesn't cost any more than any of the older Hopper receivers. I'm not sure on the cost comparisons to D*.

Your still Recording all those shows AT THE SAME TIME ...

I agree 10 would probably be fine, but I'm sure there are others that think 25 is too few.

For my wife and I (no kids or others in the house), Sunday nights during football season are the worst. Due to the delays cause by the games, we have to extend timers we wouldn't have to otherwise on the night we record the most shows. If it was up to me, they would put all sports on sports-only channels which are an add-on for the people who want to watch such things. Most of the rest of the time, 5 tuners are plenty.

I am currently running 21 tuners, each kid plus my mother have their own HR24, Gene plus 3 hr24's in the theater, living room, rec room, and master bedroom.
The kids and my mothers are all isolated so nobody deletes some one else program

Your spoiled ....
When I grew up there was 1 TV in the house .... having one in the bed room was unheard of.

Let alone having your own recvr.

First TV was in '63, us kids were the channel tuners of the 2 or 3 available channels. How things have changed with the snowflake generation.

Well, with the recent release of the DPH42 multiswitch I guess its only logical they would start allowing it ...

It isn't so much the tuners or hard drive capacity because of EHDs, but my wife has pushed us close to 200 timers a few times, and physical redundancy wouldn't hurt, either.

Multiple Genies, and/or HS17s, would really be useful.

one thing that seems to be overlooked is number of availabe tuners
sure 7 sounds like a lot, but if you have 3,4 ect minis, the number of tuners left to record can dwindle fast
with the hs17 supporting up to 7 minis it could have 0 tuners left to record

if directv wants to fix that, just bring out a receiver that can hook to the hs17, but has a built in tuner and can output 4k, an h25 with 4k out would work

Manual recordings and the DirecTV app

DirecTV needs to have the McGreggor / Mayweather fight in 4K.
