That's just the way we roll here in Detroit. I haven't seen him in any all-star games, so maybe he hasn't been that great anywhere else either? Pretty much looks like the Olympic's were his "15 minutes".

Nope.....because his point guard style of play is very European....distribute, shoot and a dash of flashy....in the NBA, guards HAVE to play defense.

15 minutes is 1 game, not a whole round robin tournament....

Back to the subject at hand WTF! Isiah Thomas really? Granted he can't do too much damage at a nothing college basketball program, then again he's the reason why the CBA no longer exists. I feel like either he'll lose big at FIU or that if he wins he'll cheat big time to do it. Isiah has no charcater whatsoever. I heard that Tim Hardaway was in the running for this job too. He doesn't have any experience in coaching, but that's hardly a prerequisite for a program like FIU. He sure wouldn't be nearly as much trouble as Isiah. How long do you think it'll take before all 500 people that go to FIU's home games start the Fire Isiah chant?

That's nice and snobbish of you..... The entire university athletic program is on the way up. The basketball team was at a cross roads. They were looking for a name to help bolster the program. No need for the "you ain't sh*t...because we won the national championship atttitude.....".....

Anders, check the NFL Draft thread. Did you hear about Duke's Paulus trying out for the Green Bay Packers?!

Dude take it however you want but FIU is a nothing basketball program. I've got no problem with a team wanting to get better, and yes schools like FIU are the starting point for many coaching careers, that or they are the end of the line. It's just crazy that FIU would go with someone like Isiah. I guess they would have hired OJ if he weren't locked up.

I take it as a snobbish answer by calling an upstart program a "nothing program"....
Schools and professional organization hired controversial coaches all the time to pump in some excitement.....so this is not unchartered territory.

Thomas to work for free in 2009-10

MIAMI -- Here's a sign of how badly Isiah Thomas wanted to return to coaching: He's working for free at [ame="http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/clubhouse?teamId=2229"]FIU - College Basketball - Golden Panthers News, Schedule, Players, Stats, Video - Men's Basketball - ESPN[/ame]

This is going to be a trainwreck. You think Isiah will pay any attention to the myriad of regulations the NCAA has on recruiting? Me neither. :D

I am curious to know how sure of your statement....I mean you are assuming the athletic director is gonna turn a blind eye to everything he does? IF ANYTHING, he will be watched twice as close as if they would have hired Roy Williams.....

The fact that the AD hired him says they don't care what happens. Look Isiah's not going to be able to sign McDonald's AA's to FIU so he'll likely turn to juco's and guys from diploma mills, maybe even some ex-cons who knows. UConn is in trouble for having a former manager turned agent recruit players. Isiah wouldn't think twice about using sleezy guys like that to land players.

There's only one angle that Isiah is playing here. He wants to restore his image by becoming a good college coach. FIU is an entry point. He's too impatient to try to win legit there so he'll do whatever it takes to win big quick and then try to parlay it into a job in the Big East or something like that. When you take over a team that has lost 20 games 3 of the last 4 years and you want to win big and do it in less than 2 years that says win at all costs, screw the rules. Trust me this is going to be a disaster. The only question is how far he'll go and when the NCAA busts them. If it's after Isiah's already gone then he'll claim none of it was his doing.

Heard on local NBC affiliate that Isiah Thomas could be named head coach at Florida International University as early as 10am today. Not sure if it will be a good thing or a bad thing. FIU people must have overlooked at the negative stuff that happened with the Knicks.
In my opinion, at first glance this appears to be a boneheaded move by FIU...however, I feel that FIU is going to benefit from this relationship for two reasons:

1. The name "Isiah Thomas" will bring players to the University. There is "NO" doubt about this! True, while his track records with Toronto, Indiana and the Knicks would lead everyone to believe he is basketball's version of a pair of lead sneakers, he is still "high profile" in the basketball world and his name alone will bring talented players to FIU.

2. While Mr. Thomas was a horrible "professional" coach, manager and businessman...by golly, he may yet find his "niche" coaching in the college ranks. While I am not sure if he will be successful, he still has a lot to offer the basketball community and this arrangement could actually work.

In any case, if doesn't work out FIU will have some talented players on scholarship.

But how does he get them? There's 30,985,274,101 rules the NCAA has about recruiting and eligibility. Does anyone think that Isiah will bother to learn and adhere to a single one of them? He'll call guys whenever he pleases, pay them, fix their grades, bail them out of prison if need be, etc. There's dozens of apsiring coaches out there who would be willing to run a team like this and would and least have a shred of integrity while doing it. This is like asking Michael Vick to watch your dogs while you're out of town.

That's a lot of assumptions there. This sounds kind of personal.
