I used native feature when I had Directv in hd for 6 months back a few years ago. It sucked because every time I changed channels ,the picture would black out and pop in and out till it settled down and the aspect ratio would have to be fixed and the audio would get louder for sd and lower for hd. I quickly stopped using that feature for the remaining time I had them.

Since all channels except ABC, Fox and ESPN broadcast in 1080i, set it for that and forget it.
