Can a dish LNB be used without the plastic cover. (Dish Pro or Legacy).

It appears as though the cover is merely cosmetic because the LNB itself is sealed.

Does anybody recommend it be covered with anything?

The cover provides additional protection from the elements.... not COMPLETELY necessary for the system to function, but definately a good idea.... it also supposedly helps reduce static buildup from wind and debris...

Not true - metal case is perfect protection against ESD, while the plastic is work as Van dah Graaf generator under sun and wind conditions.

[Actually, it's bad idea post same question many times in different threads.]

Pretty sure metal is a little more conductive of static electricity than coated plastic.

Exactly... the metal will dissipate the static, and it is directly connected to ground. Plastic coating encourages static buildup.

But you still have the metal underneath... the plastic is just making it so the static doesn't even make it to the metal....

It will build up on outer surface of the plastic cover. Pretty simple stuff to continue discuss your mistake: "it also supposedly helps reduce static buildup from wind and debris...".

My point being that while static may build up on the exterior of the plastic housing, that is not necessarily transferring to the internal components of the LNB because of the additional layer of protection provided.

I would agree in only one point - the case protect from UV and partially from rain/snow. But the metal case is not require the protection at all.
Rest is insignificant.

Disadvantage - inside caverns attract insects like wasps or spiders. :(
