What is the least commitment we are going to have to make?
Where is the best place to get the best deal on Dish?
Should we wait for a better deal, or is now the best time to switch?

1. Either a two year commitment or you can pay a large upfront fee and not be on a contract.
2. Not sure but a local retailer is usually good or online sometimes you get a prepaid visa giftcard for signing up.
3. No one knows upcoming promotions so it's up to you.

Thanks everyone! Should I expect to pay for the DVR or is it included in the price? How much do they run? I have an HD TV and an old non HD that I want hooked up. Right now we have non-HD DirecTV on both. Is VOD extra?

DVR is included at no extra cost except for the VIP 922 which costs $200 upfront. However, everybody here recommends the VIP722k as Dish's best DVR. There is a monthly DVR service fee of $6/month unless you do decide to get the 922 in which case it's $10/month. You would only need one DVR because it has two tuners (1 HD and 1 SD) And Finally, VOD does cost extra ($6.99 for HD rental)

Unless you already have a Dish system in place (like you had service and are coming back) it is probably better if you go with the commitment. Even if you cancel the cancellation fee will probably be less than the cost of buying a dish, receiver and setting them up. Plus with commitment you will get a lot off a month and a visa gift card. Probably just a few months of service before you hit the break even point.

Switching now will give you the longest time before the next price increase (slated for Feb 2013), you will be just about out of commitment when it happens and you can decide what to do then.

Note.. the 722k has two tuners both HD, the *outputs* are HD for TV1 (1 HDMI, 1 Component, and 1 SD Composite output sets), and SD for TV2, with the SD being available as standard coax cable out and RCA V/L+R out (composite out).

Many VOD itemss are at an additional fee, with SD to HD offerings from 99 cents up to $6.99 for a full length movie. There are very few VOD items available free of charge, most of a negligible value ... some 5 minute videos related to travel & destinations, there is a preview up there for something about Tron Legacy or the making of, etc.. but most aren't worth the cost in $ or time to get access to. Much of the VOD offering for TV shows & Movies at higher bit rates either take too long to download (or need to be started and then you come back later) or are so very slow in overall download speed that it frustrates many people.

Dish is also working on their "DishOnline.Com" offering which is similar to Hulu, and appears to try to offer content that mirrors your available programming.

And lastly ... with the 722k, it is one of the receivers capable of supporting the SlingAdapter (99 dollars on dish's site) with it, in working order, you get an option to watch anything on your 722k anywhere you have high speed internet. It works sufficiently that 99 isn't a bad upgrade option. The 99 dollars is currently a one time fee, the adapter takes over "TV2" when in use, and there is currently no per monthly cost to using Dish's apps for the slingadapter (SlingAdapter as opposed to a full utility Sling Box, whis is a one time purchase, but currently requires a monthly fee to maintain web access for them, again the full SlingBox not SlingAdapter)

Oh and one more thing ... the 722k has a module bay, which allows you to purchase and install an OTA (over the air) module that you could attach to an old fashioned arial, to receive broadcast TV independently of "Locals" from the Satellite. With one of those OTA Modules, you can then record upto 4 stations at once (2 Satellites, 2 OTA)

Of the biggest drawbacks of the 722k ... currently only use 500G hard drives, so you get only 55hrs HD or 300+ hours of SD recording. You can hook up an External Hard Drive ("EHD") and move recordings ... but currently you can't record directly to the drive, you can play from the external drive though, and if you had two 722k's on your account, you could move the external hard drive from 722k to 722k.

I think that about covers all of it so far.. wish lists, are something else.. :)

You are mistaken on one thing here. The stand alone slingbox does NOT require a monthy fee to maintain web access. I have had one hooked up to my D* box for some time, and there is no fee associated with it aside from the upfront cost of the box.

If I misuderstood what you were saying I apologize.

Edit: after re reading it, it appears you are saying there is a monthly fee to maintain web access for a stand alone sling box if used with E*. Is this correct, and if so, why would they charge you for that?

No ... you understood me the first time.. Its me that's mistaken.. its not a monthly fee with Sling Box ... but that you have to buy their mobile apps ... sorry about that confusion.. and maybe they will make them free too some day.. but an add on fee for stand alone apps.

Edit: I can't go up and correct my previous post, would if I could.

Ok, gotcha. Yes, the mobile sling player app is $30. It is higher than most apps on any marketplace, but even with the one time fee, I feel that it is worth it.
No biggie. Glad we got it straightened out.

You can download the dish remote access app and it has the slingplayer built into it. An the price is free.

Yeah.. that's probably the way it will go free apps/free Dishplayer app integration/replacing sling's apps... since Dish (Echostar) owns Sling now.. The problem I have ... is wondering if Dish's slow to respond (or even acknowledge problems) pacing will deteriorate the Sling brand.
