Marvel Getting Extremely Close To Signing Joaquin Phoenix As Doctor Strange

Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange has had a lot of names rumored to be in contention for the titular role. In fact, it ranks up there with most rumored names for any comic hero in recent memory. We've seen everyone from Jon Hamm to Jack Huston suggested for the role, with Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and even Daniel Radcliffe being whispered in lower tones as contenders in between. Out of all the names rumored in contention for the role, though, it looks like it all comes down to the most interesting name mentioned in the pack: Joaquin Phoenix.
At least that's what Collider is running with, as they are claiming exclusive knowledge that after almost a month of radio silence, Phoenix is in "final negotiations" to play the gifted neurosurgeon turned practitioner of the magical arts known as Doctor Strange. According to sources, the reasoning for the delay in the negotiations is that, naturally, Joaquin Phoenix isn't going to want to be bound by a Marvel contract that prevents his work on smaller films akin to Paul Thomas Anderson's upcoming Inherent Vice. This isn't that weird, considering that his rumored involvement with not only Doctor Strange but also Batman v. Superman: Dawn Of Justice have been two of the most surprising developments in the superhero game as of late. Of course, if the former experience turns out to be more like the latter, the most recently-rumored Jack Huston might just have a shot after all. With nearly two complete phases of films almost under their belt, Marvel Studios looks to be kicking things into high gear with their Phase Three development, and with that exciting prospect comes a lot of uncharted territory. While we will be seeing sequels like Captain America 3 and Guardians of the Galaxy 2, the studio is also starting some new franchises with newer kids on the block like Ant-Man, Doctor Strange and others. With this new territory is going to come some new actors, and those new actors are going to be carrying a brand that big names like Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans have brought to prominence. Landing Joaquin Phoenix for Doctor Strange would not only be a great piece of fascinating casting, it would be a credit towards ensuring the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Of course, we all know how quickly "final negotiations" can turn into nothing when it comes to Marvel Studios.Remember, it was once reported that Adam McKay was in such stages of negotiations to direct Ant-Man, only to see it turn to dust. For now, Joaquin Phoenix is the front runner, and it's up to Marvel Studios to either confirm or deny this news in short order. Of course with the Marvel Cinematic Universe ruling the comic movie world at this point, they could confirm at any damned time they wanted to and we'd still be waiting with baited breath. In the meantime, you'll be able to see Joaquin Phoenix play a different type of Doc in P.T. Anderson's Inherent Vice, which is scheduled to drop on December 12, 2014. http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Marv...ing-Joaquin-Phoenix-Doctor-Strange-66969.html imo I think he could pull it off if he has his head straight!! ;) :)

Doctor Strange Is Down To These Three Frontrunners http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Doctor-Strange-Down-Three-Frontrunners-67774.html
There was once a time when Marvel's Doctor Strange project was the more stable of the two new Phase 3 films in production, as Ant-Man had a cast but no director at the eleventh hour. While that is a rather problematic scenario to be in, it is perhaps even more of a problem when a director has been selected and there's no cast to put your film into action. This is what Scott Derrickson has to contend with at this point, with the role of Doctor Strange still vacant, but down to three big choices: Colin Farrell, Benedict Cumberbatch and Keanu Reeves. The Wrap has the official betting odds down to three high profile names, though it was four until long time frontrunner Joaquin Phoenix was removed from the running by his representatives. The three names still in play are previously hinted contenders Keanu Reeves and Benedict Cumberbatch, as well as the newly added prospect of Colin Farrell. All three are really good choices, but there can only be one, and we think we know who it will be.

Report: Benedict Cumberbatch Suiting Up as Dr. Strange https://www.yahoo.com/movies/report-benedict-cumberbatch-suiting-up-as-dr-strange-101103245782.html
Benedict Cumberbatch is evidently not content with his already enormous Comic-Con celebrity. Deadline is reporting that the Emmy-winning Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch is in final negotiations to join the Marvel Universe as the cosmic sorcerer Dr. Strange. The actor, who could be an Oscar contender this year for his turn as genius mathematician Alan Turing in the fall biopic The Imitation Game, would be the latest big star to join the ever-expanding film multiverse. He’d play Stephen Vincent Strange, a neurosurgeon-turned-Sorcerer Supreme who teams up with heroes from the Avengers to help defend Earth from cosmic and magical threats.

Of all the actors mentioned, Cumberbatch would have been my choice. I go back a long way, to the 60's with Dr. Strange, the Ditko and Steranko drawn books, and if they do it right this will be an LSD trip type of movie.

Benedict Cumberbatch Is Your Doctor Strange http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/...ange_n_6272318.html?ncid=txtlnkusaolp00000592 Benedict Cumberbatch is officially 'Doctor Strange' really officially this time https://tv.yahoo.com/news/benedict-cumberbatch-officially-doctor-strange-231000112.html
Benedict Cumberbatch is officially the Sorcerer Supreme. Following months of speculation, Marvel announced on Thursday that Cumberbatch will play the lead role in "Doctor Strange." "Stephen Strange's story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity," Marvel Studios president and "Doctor Strange" producer Kevin Feige said in a statement. "In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character."Cumberbatch was first rumored for the part back in June, but Marvel's search would later focus in on Joaquin Phoenix. But after Phoenix dropped out of consideration, Cumberbatch's name resurfaced in late October. Marvel wouldn't confirm anything then, but the new round of rumors proved true."Doctor Strange," written by Jon Spaihts ("Prometheus") and directed by Scott Derrickson ("Sinister"), will arrive in theaters on Nov. 4, 2016.

Marvel delays 'Doctor Strange' to Nov. 4, 2016 (update) http://www.polygon.com/2014/10/28/7085151/doctor-strange-movie-release-date-marvel-studios
Doctor Strange, the Marvel Studios feature film focused on the genius neurosurgeon, will hit theaters Nov. 4, 2016, the company announced today during a special event in Los Angeles. The movie was originally scheduled to premiere in July 2016.The delay follows reports yesterday from Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter that Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, Star Trek Into Darkness) was in final negotiations to play Doctor Strange in the film, after rumored talks with Joaquin Phoenix fell apart. Marvel did not provide any new details on casting today. Scott Derrickson (Deliver Us from Evil) is slated to direct Doctor Strange.
Update: Asked about the Cumberbatch casting report during a q-and-a following the presentation, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said, "If it was confirmed, we would have announced it today."
Update 2: "In the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of the supernatural, that involves everything from quantum mechanics to string theory. The idea of this film is to open up a whole new corner of the cinematic universe. We want to enter, through Strange, the world of parallel dimensions," said Feige, according to Marvel.

'Doctor Strange' Concept Art Emerges, Shows Benedict Cumberbatch Creating Magic http://www.ibtimes.com/doctor-stran...s-benedict-cumberbatch-creating-magic-1985299
An image for “Doctor Strange” was unveiled at Disney’s CineEurope presentation Wednesday in Barcelona. An artist's impression of Benedict Cumberbatch, who will play Dr. Stephen Strange, was released, says the Hollywood Reporter.Though the art was not released by the magazine, YouTube user FilmJunkee found it in a video reel where Cumberbatch can be seen creating magic with his hands. He can be seen wearing the Eye of Agamotto around his neck, which is supposed to be a mystical device. He appears to be wearing a cloak, which according to online speculation will have a key significance in the film.In the comics, artist Steve Ditko has depicted Doctor Strange in a red cloak, blue shirt and black tights. He wears orange gloves and an orange belt around his waist and the Eye of Agamotto around his neck. The details of Cumberbatch’s costume have yet to be revealed. The production of “Doctor Strange” is commencing soon and it is set for 2016 release. Cumberbatch was confirmed to play the lead last year.

Rachel McAdams Confirms Doctor Strange Rumours http://news.yahoo.com/rachel-mcadams-confirms-doctor-strange-rumours-184037281.html
‘Doctor Strange’ may be close to landing another cast member… as Rachel McAdams confirms rumours of her involvement.During an interview with The Los Angeles Times, the 36-year-old actress admitted that she’s currently being considered for the female lead in ‘Doctor Strange’.It’s still super-early days,” she said, “and I don’t know where that’s gonna go, if it’s gonna go anywhere at all.“I don’t have much to say about it right now,” she told Den of Geek. “There’s not really anything to comment on. But, if there is, I’ll let you know.”Of course, McAdams found herself linked to ‘Doctor Strange’ earlier this month, when rumours appeared to suggest that she had already been offered the female lead opposite Benedict Cumberbatch. But will this be a character from the comic books?I can’t help thinking that the sorceress Clea is the most likely candidate – a staple love interest from the Marvel comic books.

"Doctor Strange" Concept Art Details Hint At "Menacing" Cumberbatch http://www.comicbookresources.com/a...cept-art-details-hint-at-menacing-cumberbatch
Following Disney's presentation in Johannesburg, South Africa yesterday, new details about "Doctor Strange" concept art have emerged -- including a description of what Benedict Cumberbatch will be wearing when he takes on the role of Sorcerer Supreme.ComicBook.com spotted the tweets, which confirm that -- at least according to the concept art -- Cumberbatch will have Strange's signature robes and goatee.Additionally, htxt.co.za included a passage about the "Strange" portion of the presentation. According to their report, "Doctor Strange" looks "dark. Very dark. As in scraping the edge of ‘horror-movie-dark’ and information imparted about the film from Marvel Studios head, Kevin Feige, supports this appraisal." Feige apparently added that the film will have a "firm footing in the shadowy world of the occult and supernatural."No official "Doctor Strange" concept art has been released yet, as the film is just now gearing up for production. Director Scott Derrickson revealed earlier this week that he's started scouting for locations in London."Doctor Strange" opens on November 4, 2016.

Okay, I'll accept Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange, but I think that Keanu Reeves would have been a good choice. He's the right age and has the right look.

Doctor Strange Will Be A “Very Dark Fantasia,” Costume Details Emerge http://news.yahoo.com/doctor-strange-will-be-a-very-dark-fantasia-205959270.html
Filming on ‘Doctor Strange’ is due to commence in just three months time. This means that production plans are already well under-way, and because of this details of the film’s tone, style, and look are beginning to emerge. In fact, Ben Davis, who will be reprising his work as cinematographer on Marvel’s ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ and ‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’ on ‘Doctor Strange’, has provided the biggest revelations yet when it comes to the film, explaining that it will be Marvel’s “very dark ‘Fantasia’.”Speaking to Screen Daily, via Comic Book Movie, Davis tantalisingly teased that ‘Doctor Strange’ has a “psychedelic grounding,” before he then went on to add that it’s “not your typical Marvel action movie.”And while those remarks were more than enough to increase anticipation for ‘Doctor Strange’ a tad, his next description and comparison took that excitement up several more notches.

DOCTOR STRANGE:Disney Pulls Out All Stops at Movie Showcase
Marvel production president Kevin Feige also teased its next hero debut, Doctor Strange. The film, starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme comes out Oct. 26, 2016. With Cumberbatch in London doing Hamlet on stage (he appeared via video message, cheekily flashing the Vulcan sign) and the film not beginning production until November, Feige unspoiled a montage of concept art, featuring the caped magic man in a series of increasingly cosmic scenarios.

We Just Saw The First Amazing Footage From Dr. Strange http://io9.com/cap3-officially-110-gayer-than-cap2-i-m-so-happy-1724322482
Marvel just showed us the first footage from Doctor Strange—the latter of which hasn’t even started filming yet.Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige came on stage and started with Doctor Strange. He said the film would push the boundaries of the cinematic universe. He confirmed Tilda Swinton and Chiwetel Ejiofor as cast members, along with Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange.Cumberbatch couldn’t be at the event, but sent a video message where he promised “Girls, cars, explosions and a bit of astral projection into multiple dimensions. The usual fare.” And since director Scott Derrickson won’t start filming until November, Feige premiered a reel of concept art and visual imagery, set to music, to give fans an idea of what to expect. He said no one would ever see this reel again. It started with images of New York City. Very much the world we know from The Avengers. Strange is the foremost neurosurgeon in the world, but he has a car accident that mangles his hands. His apartment and doctor’s office are all very high tech. He then goes on a quest to look for healing. There are images of foreign lands, possibly Chinese. It’s there he meets The Ancient One, played by Swinton, who begins to help him... but it “turns into much more.” We see images of all this, and it looks pretty sweeping and beautiful—but finally, the good stuff kicked in.We see Strange standing beneath a huge black ball, him falling into a new dimension. Then he’s in what looks like space, very much in the mold of the colors of Guardians of the Galaxy. Back on Earth, we see cars floating in the air, streets twisting around like in Inception, Strange shooting yellow power out of his hands, and an image of his face in a sphere, almost like 2001. The reel ended with the only moving footage, of a CG Strange moving his hands to create the yellow power with his hands. Doctor Strange hits theaters in November 2016.

Marvel Just Showed Doctor Strange, And He Looked Like This http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Marvel-Just-Showed-Doctor-Strange-He-Looked-Like-77457.html
Marvel Studios is going to be getting a bit weird with the release of their next big non-sequel superhero film. Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange will be landing in November 2016, and we’ve already been promised that the film will fully embrace crazy sci-fi/fantasy concepts like alternate dimensions, while also presenting something visually akin to Disney’s Fantasia. Sadly, Marvel and Disney have not yet released any materials publicly to give us a look at what to expect from the film, but today we got a very special preview of the Sorcerer Supreme’s new movie. The big live-action presentation was held at the D23 Expo this morning, and while Doctor Strange hasn’t actually entered production just yet, that didn’t stop the movie from showing off some goods. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was on stage during the event, and introduced a special sizzle reel featuring previously unrevealed artwork from the new blockbuster – including our "first look" at Benedict Cumberbatch. And I can tell you that he looks exactly how you want him to look. Doctor Strange isn’t scheduled to go into production until November, which means that it’s probably going to be a while before a first look image is released, but today’s D23 presentation most definitely did a great job prepping our palate for the adventure. Stay tuned for more details about the exciting new film, and get ready for its arrival in theaters on November 4, 2016.

Disney Teases Doctor Strange As Well http://wegotthiscovered.com/movies/marvel-captain-america-civil-war-trailer-d23/
Kicking off with the Sorcerer Supreme, the studio promised that the movie would “push the boundaries” of their cinematic universe and teased that we would see “girls, cars, explosions and astral projection.” Since filming doesn’t get underway until November, no footage was shown. Instead, the audience got a bit of early concept art, which apparently featured the following:Strange going to the far east, then being transported to, as promised, multiple dimensions. Cars flying through the air in the city, Baron Mordo fighting him, and the full on red caped look straight out of the comics. He’s doing magic, pulling mighty magical chains, and no joke, that look was RIGHT out of the comics. Even a quick 1-second CGI shot of Strange shooting magic bolts capped it all off. Huge reaction from the crowd.

Doctor Strange Wants Mads Mikkelsen For Villainous Role
‘Hannibal’ star Mads Mikkelsen might just be joining the world of superheroes… as he enters talks for a villainous role in ‘Doctor Strange’.According to Variety, the 49-year-old Danish actor is currently being pursued for a villainous role in Marvel’s upcoming movie… but will he take the role?“Mads Mikkelsen is in early talks to play one of the villains in Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange’ opposite Benedict Cumberbatch,” they revealed. “While sources say no offer has been delivered, one is expected shortly. Marvel had no comment on Mikkelsen’s involvement.”‘Doctor Strange’ will see Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role as Earth’s Sorcerer Supreme – a former-neurosurgeon who learns the art of sorcery in order to protect Earth from mystical threats.Although little is known about Dr Steven Strange’s first big screen outing, we do know that Tilda Swinton will play the Ancient One – the good doctor’s mentor and teach of the mystical arts. And with Chiwetel Ejiofor joining the cast, it’s thought that he will play classic villain, Baron Mordo. But who will Mikkelsen be playing?

Doctor Strange Has Officially Found Its Leading Lady http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Doctor-Strange-Has-Officially-Found-Its-Leading-Lady-82487.html
There aren’t any big comic book movies coming up in the last few months of 2015, but when 2016 hits, it will bring a veritable tidal wave of superheroes from Marvel, DC, and Fox. So many grown ups running around in tights. One of the characters we’re most excited to see is Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme when he shows up in Doctor Strange next fall, and while we knew Beneict Cumberbatch will play the title character, we now know who his leading lady will be.According to The Wrap, Rachel McAdams confirmed the rumor that she will star in Doctor Strange while talking to them at the Toronto International Film Festival. While this rumor has been making the rounds for the last few months, and the True Detective Season 2 star has never played demure when it comes to revealing that she was in fact in discussions for the part, which now appears to be all hers. What we don’t know, however, is what exactly the nature of her role is. We speculated about it a bit back when McAdams’ involvement was first rumored, but we don’t know for sure. She could be Clea, who is Doctor Strange’s most notable love interest in the comics, not to mention related to some of his most powerful adversaries; though there are other notable female characters within his purview, including Victoria Bentley and Morgana Blessing, or it’s possible McAdams could play a wholly original character, one specifically cooked up for the MCU.
