here is my setup:

HR-21 700, Lynkys router, gateway desktop, acer laptop.

gateway hard wired to router, router hard wired to HR-21, laptop is wireless.

I can get the HR-21 to see the gateway, the gateway can see the laptop, but the HR-21 does not see the laptop

all media sharing is checked

any advice?

First off, this sounds like a computer issue so you would do well to ask the question in a computer issues forum.

Have you run the Windows network wizard?

Have you shared any folders?

Are you running any kind of third party firewall software?

When you ask the question in a computer forum, try to offer the answers to the above questions as context.

I have found that the 3rd party firewall I was running does screw things up pretty bad.

I now have the firewall disabled and have no further access issues.
