Mediacom Extending Service 2 More Poles

A few months ago Mediacom only offered 15meg in my area, now they offer 150 meg Their line ends only 2 poles from my house. Online it says my address is in their service area and when I call they said I'm about 2 miles from their coverage. My neighbors neighbor had them a few months ago and they like about 400 feet away. If I order online will they run the 400 foot cable to my house?

The usual max cable run from tap to house is 300ft. Very unlikely they would extend another tap 1 or 2 more poles. Thats a big expense to them for 1 new cust getting internet only.

If you are in the city limits, the city probably requires service to every address.

Only 1/2 mile from city limits. I've ashed around and heard this provider isn't so great. VDSL should be in this area soon so I'll just wait for that.

Mediacom either refuses to or doesn't have the dollars to secure the sports channels. So Mediacom in Des Moines doesn't have MLB, NBA or NHL networks, and doesn't get NBC Sports Extra Time, not to mention out-of-market sports networks, the way the sat providers get. So if you're not a sports fan, this could be an option for you. If you are a sports fan, you'll be much happier with another service.

I'm not interested in their TV services, just internet. Not a big sports fan either. I called and they said they won't run anything more than 300 feet from the tap. Would inline amplifiers solve this?

Is it 400 feet from the poles to your house? Would you gain 100 feet if you borrow someone's camper, have it placed by the road, have them setup the internet there, then after the cable company leaves put in your own weather proof box to terminate the connection with a barrel connector/amp to your house? Or you could bury electric (and maybe ethernet) wire out close to the road, put the modem (and maybe a router) in an enclosure to get service to your house.

I was thinking about something like that. Don't know it it is illegal to string your own cable over the road.

I was not meaning having to string the cable over the road but having them go to the edge of your property where your house is then you run the rest of the cable yourself. Do you own across the road as well? Perhaps you could do a road bore underneath the road if they will not go as far as to your house. Another option would be to setup a wirelss link from a neighbor's house to yours and pay half (or all) their internet bill for allowing them to do it.

Looks like its a no go. The neighbors think its illegal. The local bar has the 150 meg package and it looks like nothing but a joke, did a speedtest on both my iPhone 4S and windows tablet and was lucky to get 20 meg.

If there are a lot of users on at the bar then it could drop the speed down but I doubt it would drop the speed that much though.

What did he think was illegal? Do you have to get neighbor's permission to get poles installed on their property in order to get cable at your home at all?

I got a call from a local tech and was told they will run it for $1000 None of the neighbors are interested so I would have to pay it all. I also asked if I supplied the cable and some inline amplifiers if they would do it and it was still a no go. Looks like it will be a waiting game for them expand.

How about getting service at a friends house and then running your own wire from the pole

Theres a few problems with advising someone to do this Claude. #1, its illegal. #2, when I come across crap like this, I will cut cust line in 20 pieces or more and make note on address of illegal hookup. After a couple of illegal hookups from someone we bring criminal charges against them. #3, if cust is subscribing to home telephone with a friends address on account then if said cust has 911 emergency, ambulance will respond to friends address instead of cust if its a hangup. Poor advice from a seasoned "professional"!

If your paying for the service it's not illegal.

There is nothing wrong with being creative to subscribe to the service when your in an area that is not serviceable.

I gave them a call today. I'm now interested in their TV as well and made clear to the rep I want the whole 9 yards in channel line up with HD and DVR for 4 rooms. They are sending someone out to scope it out. Hopefully this might soften the blow on the cable run. I'm so fed up with DTV and their price roller coasters I wouldn't mind the price of the cable run at times.

I should get a call back from them within 72 business hours.

If they stick to the $1K to do the cable run, I think you ought to really think about how much money that is. While Mediacom's service around here is decent they are far from the most responsive company if you have issues. And they do almost everything by phone when it comes to contracts, subscription levels and deals. Nothing in writing and no email followup that gives you ammo when someone claims a deal wasn't exactly the way you thought it would be and they are the only ones with the recording. And there have been many reports of even when they admit the 'deal' was whatever, they still didn't honor it.

I'm with Mediacom, but I'm not on any contract with them because I wasn't and still am not interested in being locked in with them.

But if you go ahead with it, you might consider using a customer owned Tivo vice the Pace unit they have. The one they use has a small (500Mb) hard drive and doesn't get hardly any of the streaming video services that a real Tivo unit gets if that's important. One thing you do get with the Pace unit is access to their VOD. Since I don't have their unit, I don't know how extensive their VOD offerings are.

Little do they know I was also recording the call, be a fool not to when it comes to that kind of money.

They always have appeared suspicious to me. They were saying at first I had to visit one of their local offices to discuss a cable run. The rep gave me the address and when I asked for their phone number they seemed shocked, "sorry sir we only have addresses for local offices". I punched in the address on Google maps with them on the phone, I confirmed that's the one that gave me and I mentioned that address was a cornfield in the middle of nowhere. They insisted the address was correct.Kinda funny for they have no phone numbers for THEIR offices.
