It's irrelevant in this context. "Better" in regards to picture quality is all relative to the person looking at it. From a technical standpoint, yes, D*'s picture has a higher resolution. But, that's like saying the Bugatti Veyron is "better" than a Honda Accord because the Veyron has more horsepower.
If you follow the wrong links, you can find that DIRECTV used to do 1440x1080 on their MPEG2 HD channels. Not everything you read is necessarily as true as the day it was posted and more than a few times, there won't be any dates associated with the posting.
So you're saying dish is full res 1920x1080 full HD?
Are you sure you want to stick with that statement?
And directv hasn't had MPEG 2 HD since 2007 and both were deemed HD lite because they both were.

That is a false statement. "They" meaning Consumer Reports has no, none, nada testing results for DISH and Direct TV in the report so they did not take anything into the equation, much less specifically the HD being received. There is no objective testing. There is a survey of users, that rate both companies the same overall. Those users rate the PQ of Direct one step higher than DISH. BUT, by how much we do not know. Would 1% more have put DISH in the same category? Would 1% less have put Direct in the same category?
Bottom line, Consumer Reports did not rate either company, a survey did.
The three widely available services I have said for along time are the about equal overall and the best are the three in that survey, each having their own strengths and weaknesses.

The reliable (that which didn't come from a CSR or an installer) material that I've seen that said one way or the other is years old so it isn't safe for me to assume that it remains true today just as it isn't safe to assume that DIRECTV going from 5 HD channels/tpn to 6 didn't have a perceptible impact.
What we need is someone with that hardware mod that allowed you to record the decrypted stream to your PC. You were able to see what the transmitted resolution was because you could examine the file with PC tools.

What's already been done? I think P Smith was or is an expert on picking apart the unencrypted part of Dish's DVB-S transmissions. I don't think he had any part in the R5000, which was the name Nextcom gave to their device. (Yes, I found the name after a concerted effort.) Are you saying he did?

If you had actually read you would see that I am having some issues with Mediacom. But they have said they are taking the system down tonight to change a 'node', which they assure me will fix those issues. If that indeed fixes things, then the decision will be to sit tight. If it doesn't, then the decision gets harder because there are solid reasons to pick either D* or E*. Money's the same either way;
D* has more HD Premiums but worse equipment
E* is missing one HD Premium (showtime extreme) that is important to me, but has great equipment.
Possibly this will end up being a coin toss.

As a matter of fact they do matter.
We would not be having this conversation if Dish was providing full Res HD.
Whether people can notice or not doesn't matter, but when they can notice, and Consumer reports even notices, there is a Technical reason that Dish Networks HD is in fact less impressive.
No one is stating that Dish and Directv is miles apart in HD PQ, But like it or not there is a Technical reason on why they are not the leader.
And it starts by not having Full RES HD.
