Actually, the Red Sox priority is still one more proven arm. The still need either an Oswald-quality starter to round out the rotation, or a quality middle reliever to replace Aceves is he is moved to the starting rotation.

And then they have the annual, tough decision to make regarding Wakefield.

Report: Pujols signed backloaded deal with Angels
Albert Pujols will take a $4 million pay cut in 2012, and he'll make the same salary with the Los Angeles Angels in 2013 that he made in 2011 with the St. Louis Cardinals.Of course, he'll also be making more than $30 million per year near the end of the 10-year deal he signed with the Angels. All of the above — in sum, that his $254 million contract is backloaded — was revealed to ESPN.com by Major League Baseball sources.According to the ESPN.com report that also was circulated byCBSsports.com and SI.com, Pujols agreed to the backloaded deal so the Angels would have flexibility to sign free-agent pitcher C.J. Wilson (5 years, $77.5 million).Pujols will make a base salary of $12 million this coming season, and will make $16 million in 2013 — the same salary he received from the Cardinals in 2011.The sources told ESPN.com that Pujols' contract could total $265 million if he "attains reachable award bonuses and milestone incentives."The MLB source confirmed a recent Yahoo! Sports report that Pujols will receive a $3 million bonus for his 3,000th hit (he has 2,073) and a $7 million bonus if he breaks Barry Bond's career record of 762 home runs (Pujols has 445).

They had David Einhorn but a deal with him fell through....

Long story. The Wilpons want an investor, but their stipulation is that they (the Wilpons) want written into the contract that they have the option of buying the investor out at some point.

In other words, we'll take your money because we need liquidity right now, but we want to reserve the right to get rid of you when we get solvent again.

Isn't that considered a "Silent Partner ?"

Isn't that considered a "Silent Partner ?"

A silent partner is basically someone who owns a portion, but not enough to have any say in the board room. There is more to it than that, but that's the simple version. Wow...my accounting degree comes in handy for once!

Where the Mets situation differs is that the Wilpons want the right to buy anyone not named Wilpon out if/when they become liquid again. This is what is keeping the team from attracting additional investors.

If they were just looking for a standard silent partner, that would not be difficult to find.

Marlins and Cubs are this --><-- to making a deal to acquire Carlos Zambrano. He wants to come down and play for Ozzie Guillen, but will he give up his no trade clause and how will the Cubs and Marlins divy up what he is owed, approx. $18 million.

The Chicago Cubs are trading Carlos Zambrano to the Miami Marlins, according to a source familiar with the situation.

The deal, which is pending physicals, requires the Cubs to pay $15 million of the $18 million owed Zambrano in 2012. Zambrano has a $19 million vesting option for 2013 if he finishes in the top four for the Cy Young Award.

The Cubs will receive veteran right-handed pitcher Chris Volstad.
